There are tons of Idol groups with people who rap in them that I enjoy but what grabbed me was BTS was a group that had RAPPERS that became Idols. For me, a lot of times it's very evident and some groups I can't get into because they have IDOLS who rap instead of RAPPERS that became Idols. And if you're going to present a rapper to me, they need to understand just a bit about the deeper meaning and technique. As you said, it's an understanding that you have that's deeply ingrained. Watching the rapline do one of their cyphers or other rap only songs, just watching their movement around a stage even made me feel nostalgic. I lived in the West of NYS but even in my little neck of the woods during the 70s and 80s we had a little pocket of hip hop culture. Just seeing how Suga paces when he raps or RM's gestures or Hobi's Hope on the Street where he shows all his poppin', lockin etc felt like home, it was familiar. It's not just a way to make music, the culture claimed them years ago and they respect what it's brought them.

SEE you get it. You get it that's EXACTLY what I'm talking about. You understand and that's what I love about this. BTS is able to take that and expand on it and reach people from all walks, and still be yourself HipHop based. You can't NOT get emotional about that lol. 😁🕉️🙏🏾💙⛩️

I totally agree, Ebony. They started out in 2013 with more rapping since that was their core, RM, J-Hope and Suga and slowly evolved more into “pop”. However the rap line never changed. They’re still hard core rappers. Also I love how Suga is also Agust D where he can show more of his true personality. He can have the best of both worlds, BTS and Agust D.

I just recently tried to get into other groups beside BTS, give them fair chance you know. And understood that when i listen to them i feel their rapline is not fluid as it is manufactured and "trained" it doesn't feel genuine like BTS's. Even though jhop himself couldn't rap, but he came out from street dance and hip hop was in his blood already and he told that he freestyled always with suga and rm.

I remember Jackson of Got 7, he said in a show together with RM that his role is someone who raps for the group but he doesn't consider himself as rapper. He is a good friend of RM and I think he educated himself. He got my respect with that.

I liked when you said it is pointless to try to categorize BTS . I think they created a category of their own. They are that special, as simple as that. I think there is tons and tons you haven´t seen or heard yet. Cyphers, their mix tapes, solo side projects. You also said you haven´t paid attention to Suga before because he sounded differently ( or something like that)? You would see a totally different side to him if you heard for instance his " First love" or " So far away" ( that´s on his mix tape though and written and produced by Agust´D who is Suga/ Min Yoongi´s creative alter ego). You barely scratched the surface man:-) Those guys know absolutely no boundaries when it comes to genres, their sound, emotional expressiveness, creativity etc. Go on and discover more. On the side note - I was laughing when I saw that during the first part of your video, that burning incense in the background emitted smoke right out of Suga´s head:-)

@@MONQTV I second that wish. Please have a listen to it, you won´t regret it. I just recently discovered "Hip hop lover" too and it is simply amazing. One darn incredible live performance of it is from 2017 and that stage they performed on is simply mind blowing - " 2017 Memories "Bullet proof pt.1+pt.2" and "Hip hop lover" ( I think you have already seen and heard their early days "We are bullet proof pt. 2", but here you can hear also "We are bullet proof pt.1". The rap line´s Cyphers medley performed on that very same stage from 2017 ( Hobi in silver sparkling bucket hat, lol) is yet another incredible experience to have . The total command the three of them are having of a full seated stadium is simply chilling to witness ( Suga was quite seriously sick, running high fever during that concert and yet he performed like nobody´s business). Bangtan at its best:-)

This is a very emotional song, like their faces, said it all. The way RM kept his eyes closed through it all, even after they turned around, you can tell he was trying to hold in his emotions, there are times they cried during this performance. You also need to check out "Move", "Mad City", and "Hip Hop lover", shit everything, lol. But the way RM starts off Move addressing Suga hits you. It transfers you back in time. Suga and Rm have one of the longest relationships, they both came up from underground and took a risk with a small unknown company. They went through so much shit together including the rest of the boys. They are truly a brotherhood and no one can touch, period. You feel it in their music. It is like you can see it play out as they start to rap about their years together, it makes you feel as if you were there and lived it with them.

@@MONQTV it's something... their lyrics get more intricate and different meanings can be given to words. Namjoon has really become a player of words and acronyms. But also Suga is less angry nowadays and studying philosophy and psychology these these days and it shows in his answers and quotes. In the beginning they were telling stories from mostly their pov, but nowadays they have a bigger understanding of purpose rather than goals (Suga: I think purpose of our music is more important than the goals to achieve). I think "big hit" /Bang has given them the possibilities to learn and develop , creative freedom and mindset etc. Potential they had in each of them had possibility to develop. Their team work is always supporting each other and accept each other differences, and as I can see it has become a kind of art collective. (music, rapping, singing, dancing, visual art etc)

This song is so special to BTS. This was at a time where they were really suffering from a lot of hate and ridicule. They were so strong and determined even back then. They faced each other in that circle because it a was a moment for each other. They performed this again in 2017 during the Wings tour but that time they sang to their crowd facing out in that circle and it was with a stronger confidence signaling they were no longer scared beginners. Its really a beautiful for them and ARMY. And just a tip finding your one vocalist to focus on in BTS is dangerous...they have all 4 improved immensely and are equally talented. I wouldn't base it off of such an early performance. It's hard to pick one at all but my favorite is actually Taehyung but they are all great. Peace.

I really enjoy your commentary on the history and culture of hip hop. I think it's a hugely missed thing people assume about BTS. They have no idea they have a legit rap line. RM feels an immense sense of responsibility as the leader of BTS. BTS was truly founded around RM and he out his heart into the group. Leader is not a title like it is in the US for boy bands. In Kpop it means he takes immense responsibility for keeping the group working well together, sorting issues, and also being the translator face for the group in the US. The man is just...good. they all. Just genuinely such good people and their art is insane. So that chip he holds is bigger than you can imagine and goes way farther than just that surface "I told you so". It is SOUL deep. This was so emotional. Thank you for this and all this knowledge you provide.

13:00 Heads up every album release or festa (BTS anniversary celebration) they have a testimony song that they write or release, keeping track of their progress basically. BTS discography is a diary, their personal diary and if you care to pay attention and actually read and dissect the lyrics you can pinpoint exactly what era and what stage in their lives they were at when they wrote/released a song. They really do have the most personal lyrics/discography in kpop.

5:00 trust me BTS has one the best raplines if not the best in the entire kpop industry. All the rappers are excellent, they kill any beat and I promise you, this is just the surface that you've scratched when you get into the cyphers and the rapline songs and the solo projects and the triple, quadruple layered wordplays you will see what I mean and they just keep getting better with the years. I mean the BTS rapline who at some point was being ridiculed by the korean hip hop community (the whole leaving underground rap fiasco) is now one of the most sought after for collaborations and they collab with any type of artists and somehow make it work

I really like your insight into rap and hip hop culture. I came up in Brooklyn in the 80s and 90s and I've seen it all. I'm not an expert on the history and intricacies of the art form, but one thing I hate to see is people capitalizing on caricatures of it, and you can tell when that is happening. I felt some type of way about non-Black people making a career out of "rap" for a long time, but I never got that sense from BTS from day one. The sincerity and respect and heartfelt love for the art is evident in everything they do, and they absolutely have my respect as rap artists. I appreciate your videos for confirmation of my feelings about it. 😄 I don't know if you know a guy named Tiger JK (Drunken Tiger), he's one of RM's mentors and is known as the Godfather of Korean hip hop. He and his wife Yoon Mirae (Tasha) are part of the group MFBTY. Their music is really good, Tiger has an old school rap style that I love. I'd live if you checked them out sometime!

Thank You Only OT7 It hot me in several ways as you can tell. HipHop changed my mind state and my personality. It helped me to be more outgoing. The personality you see is because of that Culture. For some it's the music or the dance or the art but I've learned that HipHop is none of that solely it transcends beyond into the soul of humanity it is everything and everyone. It was the thing that helped me overcome the fear too let out the real me and that's why I love HipHop so much. Thank you again for taking the time to watch. ☮️🕉️🙏🏾❤️😁⛩️

Considering I’m from NY, albeit upstate, and enjoy music from all over the world (reggae to country to R&B and Latin) I, too, like you appreciate the culture and history behind music. Music brings people together (kinda like food) where you don’t have to be from that country to enjoy and appreciate it. So when you broke down BTS’ music and explained how they are real rappers with soul like the rappers from New York, you totally earned my respect. I wish you all the success on your channel.

1. There was a TV show featuring Namjoon (RM) where he read hate comments and answered: I'll prove it to you all. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4WvhmWOm7qHqK8 I think his part in this song is kind of a reflex of this. 2. One of their most intimate touching songs, for me, is Moving that is their reflexions on the years they spent sharing their first tiny dorm and moving to a little bigger one. It's so beautiful. I cry every time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXm8apptorlkrZI 3. I think most of us still get emotional when hw hear Born Singer. When the boys released it, the group was just 2 years old and a loooong path ahead.

I appreciate your reaction so much. RM and Suga were phenomenal underground rappers before they became part of BTS. Their peers in the underground gave them a whole lot of s**t for "betraying" hip hop to become idols who they considered as "girls" because they put on makeup etc. They were disrespected and hated upon. This was one of their answer to all that hate. Also the Cypher series. They really hit back at all the haters in an awesome way. BTW, a greater part (if not all) of all the harmonising and adlibs are done by Jungkook.

That was 2015. This video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJmZfH6kls-li6M ) is of them performing Born Singer at the end of 2017. The emotion is still there, and the growth (of their career at that point) is just incredible. 🥺💜👏🏼 Also, the way the 2017 performance is staged is the exact opposite of the 2015 performance; starting with them facing out to the crowd, and then with them turning to face each other toward the end. This little detail always makes me tear up. 😭 The full-circle feeing of it all is just beautiful.
