The Suncoast video you can see when you first enter the mall is where I bought my copy of Dawn of the Dead in 1996. I was 10. The blue VHS tape had just come out. I took it home, watched it, and It changed my life.

My God. My. God. The sound @4:28 when the door swings open is the closest I can imagine to what it must have smelled liked to go back to a mall in 1998/1999. I'd forgotten what malls actually sounded like once upon a time. I'm feeling kind of teary. Graduated high school 1 year later. Thank you so much for posting. *misty eyed*

So cool to see the mall back then! The original handrails, light fixtures, staircases, and even the fountain were all still there then, which have since been changed. Sadly, it looks like you guys missed going to the hallway which led to the hideout. It would be nice to see what that looked like back then, too.

This is probably some of the last footage of the mall before it started receiving its modern makeover in 1999 or 2000. I suppose the weird camera angles were due to trying to conceal the camera...as it still wasn't totally appropriate back then to be recording with a camcorder at public spaces like an indoor mall.

Recording in the mall was not allowed, and was strictly enforced for many years. They only started to relax that rule a few years after cameras became common on phones.

My parents and I frequented Monroeville Mall prior to moving out closer to Westmoreland Mall in the late 90s. I was a single digit age and my first thought when clicking on this video was "HOLY SHIT I REMEMBER THIS"... This is really bittersweet to watch. Bitter to know it doesn't look anything like this anymore, most of the original architectural details and environmental decor that made this mall more than just another giant box full of stores are now gone. But at the same time sweet that someone thought to bring a camcorder to the mall to document it with the original 1969 interior almost fully intact. All that remains of the original interior now are the skylight details, marble columns and white terrazzo floor.

I cannot thank you enough for posting this. This video contains some truly spiritual moments. I've been to the mall countless times, but never before 2003. The railings and fountain are magnificent.

Like all malls, its days are almost over. Cherish this. One day soon it'll be an abandoned, mold infested waste of space.

Though I'm not a follower of the Romero franchise, this is amazing to see. This was Monroeville Mall as I prefer to remember it. It's so sad to see it today on what seems like an unstoppable Century 3 fate
