The monsoon season is wreaking havoc in Sikkim, with heavy overnight rains in Mangan District resulting in three deaths and three individuals reported missing. The heavy downpour is expected to continue until June 16, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Gangtok.
The IMD stated, “Due to the presence of a cyclonic circulation over East Uttar Pradesh and its neighbourhood at 0.9 km above mean sea level and an east-west oriented upper air trough from this cyclonic circulation over East Uttar Pradesh to Nagaland across Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and south Assam at 0.9 km above mean sea level, combined with strong moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal, light to moderate rainfall activities with a few intense spells of heavy falls are very likely to affect the districts of Sikkim from June 12 to 16.”
Reports of Damage, Missing Persons in Mangan
In Pakshep village near Mangan, three people have died and one person is missing. The area of Geythang in Dzongu reported damage to three houses, while in Nampathang near Mangan town, several houses were damaged, and roads are currently blocked. A police outpost in Bringbong under Dzongu constituency, is under threat from a nearby landslide with staffers needing evacuation.
Infrastructure in Sankalang which is also in Dzongu took a massive hit with the foundation of a critical bridge over the Teesta River severely damaged. Authorities have declared that the bridge may collapse if the situation does not improve.
Mobile networks in North Sikkim are largely non-functional, complicating communication and emergency response efforts. Police in Mangan District have requested the urgent deployment of one platoon from the Sikkim Armed Police and a State Disaster Relief Force team for emergency operations.
Swelling of Teesta River
The Teesta River, swelled by the heavy rains, is posing a serious threat to low-lying areas, including Singtam town in Sikkim and Melli town in North Bengal. The public ground in Melli has already been submerged. Reports of the water level in Teesta River rising and houses being damaged have been confirmed from Teesta Bazaar along the NH 10 in North Bengal.
Meanwhile, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay took to social media to inform that he has reached out to the North district administration, police department, and concerned departments to ensure a swift and comprehensive response. He also assured every possible support to the victims and affected families for their recovery, temporary settlement and restoration and fulfilling their basic requirements.
