Yes, you need coins for it, unlike Tri however quests are ready day one so you can start getting them anytime you want.

Not as useful any it was in Tri anymore. You can't use the counter after the 3 hit, which is the most damage of all three hits. Counter is only viable now for a monster that attack fast.
