I tried to play once with a friend and my issue was we had to finish the mission alone to be able to play together, if I got this correctly now we can play together from the start?

Yeah it sounds like you played Monster Hunter World or a title even further back then that. Either way it’s improved a lot since then and hopefully is even better here!

Do we still get more mats by doing quests of mobs vs free roaming them? I love the thought of free roaming without having to return, but if the quests still gives extra mats it wont be worth it :/

Free roaming them, after hitting them so many times it just "starts a quest". Meaning there's probably going to be benefits for given materials or something from specific quests but "rewards numbers" should be the same.

Honestly, the coop system in beta was a freaking pain to get working with my friends, it was so uintuitive and borderline unsable we almost gave up. Why can't they do the same thing as any other game? Invite person to party, ask to teleport in same instance. Done, now you can hunt together instantly. No, instead we have a convoluted mess with party members not even showing in the group until you start a hunt. Dumb as fuck.
