I love your videos. I have been collecting for around 3 years myself ( I have always had plants but not a collection) Now you have inspired me to really pay attention to their needs and help them thrive. Before I think they were just kind of living and growing but not living to their full potential, as far as indoors anyway. I would throw a stick in the pot and tie it up with some jute but now I am making real moss poles and seeing the difference almost immediately! Thanks to you! Oh, I am growing my Thai in water at the minute, any thoughts? It looks super happy. I use hydro nutrients and super thrive. So far so good. She kept getting root rot so I put her in a glass of water and BOOM! She took off. Can I keep her there... forever?
@jasbelial3943 Жыл бұрын
Yes, why not? 😄 As long as you provide proper nutrients you can grow it in water, just make sure you keep the water clean and the roots free of algae. In terms of reoccurring root rot: It’s usually because of the soil and water schedule. Root rot is usually a sign of constant soggy soil that does not allow for any oxygen to reach the roots. A nice chunky mix that allows proper oxygen flow and is well draining is always the best for aroids. I think watering guidelines like “water it once per week” are very inaccurate as it really depends on where you live (average humidity & temperature levels). I therefore prefer to bottom water mine and have a moisture meter to regularly check on them. I would highly recommend this in case you would change it back into soil once it developed some healthy strong roots. And of course keep it moist for the first few weeks so the roots can adjust properly to the new medium.

I was inspired by your videos. I returned back to my plant journey after i saw your videos. I bought plants during lockdown but neglected them once everything is back to normal. 😂 Hopefully my new plants will thrive too.
@edwinwilson2399 Жыл бұрын
A few questions: -what type of plastic pots do you use? -I know you cant give an exact number of days because there are a lot of factors, but on average how often would you say that you water your aroids when they are in the super quick draining mix? -Does the clear pot help a lot to see root health/ watering needs? I'm considering getting some for all of my plants. -is there a video/ can there be a video in the future where you show and handle the soil before watering so that we can get a better idea of exactly how dry the plants should get between watering.

I love your videos, they're so informative. I think you've got a few details about tissue culture wrong through. Tissue culture doesn't 'create' plants, it's just a very quick and effective way of cloning them (faster than taking cuttings from mother plants). It uses chemicals to induce rooting/leaf growth from single nodes. If a plant is being tissue cultured, it just means it is being mass produced, which is how plants usually end up super cheap and common in garden centers. I'm fairly sure I've heard knowledgeable people say that deliciosa albos are in tissue culture. Tissue culture is also a common way to get variegation, because it usually involves mass producing plants from thousands of nodes, which means that naturally some of those will just mutate and start producing variegation. Hence why albo's are getting much more common, they're also in mass production. I don't think the Thai is a man made variegation, but it being stable is definitely different from the albo.
@ChadGardenSinLA Жыл бұрын
Random mutations occur 1/1000. So TC is actually a PRIME place for mutations to occur because of the sheer volume of plants being produced. I do not know, however, if that's how the thai constellation's veriegted mutation came to be. Many places online have made mentioned that it was actually created in TC, but of course, there is intellectual property that may make it more complicated than that.
@cheeseburgero1 Жыл бұрын
I got a tissue culture last year love the plant. Made it through the melting and rot phase and got Nicely established in soil. But. This summer I put the plant out too early alongside a brugmansia. I live in New England and both plants got a bit of frost. Both plants melted from frost damage but lucky came back. The Thai are harder to find. Careful with ur plants. But I'm shocked how much abuse the Thai can take and be ok.

@ChadGardenSinLA Жыл бұрын
CRISPR, anyone? LoL 🤣 Also, this cultivar is a very good example of house plants that DON'T COME from outdoors. These are essentially domesticated plants. As many house plants are being cultivated to live indoors we cannot say that outside is where they came from nor can we say that outdoors (i.e. the jungle or rainforest) are ideal conditions for them as they would have to fight and compete for survival. I've noticed that my variegated plants like the Thai Con and Albo have less variegation in my very sunny south-facing lawn in Los Angeles. And my syngonium pink confetti has lost all it's variegation in favor of all green leaves, while my adansonii was completely wiped out by my golden pothos. So even in a garden setting where they haven't gone completely feral, they still are competing with each other and the environment to survive. And one last point, even "wild" plants outdoors don't perform their best until they've been grafted to hardier root-stock to allow their foliage, flowers, or fruit to thrive beyond their original parentage.

I was tickled by the “cuddle break, la, la la, la la!” And couldn’t resist rewinding that scene😁. On to my question...Tissue culture is a lab technique used to grow a group of cells, or clone a single cell so that all cells come from that one cloned cell. Cloning requires an initial cell. Could you clarify whether the Thai constellation was cloned from a single cell from a plant in Thailand , or whether a delicious cell was genetically mutated and then cloned?

You didn't specify if you received a top cutting or a mid cutting. If it was a top cutting, then the leaves should continue to be as large as the previous leaf once the root system is established. If it was a mid-cutting, the the new growth is always smaller and will need more time to develop the larger leaves and fenestrations.

While bottom watering the plant, I noticed that it had put out 2 roots thru the bottom drainage holes. What should I do? Leave it be or upsize it again. Its doing fine. Getting a new leaf. I am worried that I will damage the roots when I bottom water. Thanks in advance for your help. I aspire to grow my plants as well as you do. Enjoy your videos
@sydneyplantguy9 ай бұрын
Leave it, the roots sticking out rhe bottom doesn’t mean the plant is rootbound. Roots like oxygen so often poke out at the bottom. I also don’t think bottom watering is a good approach IF you are using a chunky mix. Top watering flushes oxygen through the mix instead :)

There are GREAT deals on Thai Constellations currently on Mercari, Ebay, Facebook etc. I was tempted myself to buy another one for inside my house, but since it's "winter", I may just take a cutting from the one I have growing outside. BTW, In the Los Angeles basin, these grow twice as fast outdoors as they do inside SydneyPlantGuy's home. I have mine growing up a Leyland Cypress in my south facing lawn. It's given me 10 new leaves this year. 🙂
@ChadGardenSinLA Жыл бұрын
@@heatherstephens9295 I'm amazed myself to see how domesticated house plants behave outside. As they have NEVER been in the wilds, they don't behave like we would expect. Although my Thai Con and Albo are doing well outdoors, they've become less variegated (I'm assuming there is such a thing as too much light that will call for more green to come out). My syngonium pink confetti has completely gone green. And my monstera adansonii were completely wiped out by my golden pothos. So outdoors are NOT ideal conditions for house plants as they're essentially domesticated and they have to fight to survive outside.

1/1000 random mutation exists, so TC is the perfect place to make mutations. The vast majority of the Thai Consetellations' variegated origins site TC labs in Thailand. But there are intellectual property laws and there are several methodologies to use TC to make mutations to include genomic resequencing.
