It's not being used widely anymore, because it has some unexpected behaviors with caching, and most sites now are extremely dynamic and require server connection active. The SW can be very useful for when the network is off, and shows that the user needs the internet to use the site. Another use case is push notif (but Apple is not supporting it). Alerts, bg sync... For caches I personally hate it except using it for the first scenario above (user lost connection).
