In the meantime I love how in the last second his dad pats James Blunt's arm. Even when he was in severe danger of dying, he was the one that comforted his son, that chased the monsters away when the whole crew of the video take was crying helplessly.

To add to one of the comments below, his sister wrote the words based on what James and his Father used to say when they deployed (both British Army). It wasn't until listening to this song that i realised that when i deployed (ex RN ) i never said goodbye to my wife. It was always 'see you soon', 'see you on...' , never goodbye. I do the same when my two boys deploy and i never realised till i listened to this song. As for James' father, he is still with us as the song prompted a distant cousin to donate a kidney. A great reaction well done for pausing only once.

What a lovely reaction. It's one which we all share every time we watch the video, I'm sure. I heard that as James and his father were former British military men, James donated all the proceeds from this video to the UK charity 'Help For Heroes' who do so much fantastic work for ex-servicemen and women, and God bless him for that. ❤❤

This song is a good therapy session... One of the stories is that his Sister wrote this as a tribute to their Dad for what they thought was terminal condition, then ask James to put it into a song. His Dad had not heard the song when they filmed this, and it is said that when they finished he asked "why are you all crying? I'm not gone yet.".
@HankD13Ай бұрын
James Blunt was a Captain in the Household Cavalry, his father a senior officer. When James was deployed to active service in Kosovo, his fathers parting words, understand and emotions well hidden very British were "We're just two grown men saying goodbye". Already a kidney donor, his father was diagnosed with stage 4 chronic kidney disease and no suitable donor could be found - the outlook was bleak. This was shot in a single, raw take and it reduced everybody in the room to tears. Except his father. "Whats everybody crying for? I'm not dead yet" was his reported response. This song found a donor, and thankfully a happy ending.

This song hits me different. My father was never around. He’s in his 80’s now and is ill. He wants to reconnect with me. I don’t know if it’s because he has true remorse or he’s just scared of dying. I don’t know what I’ll do. What I do know is that when he does pass, it’s not going to effect me the way James is effected by the thought of his father dying. I don’t know if I’m lucky that I won’t have to deal with that pain when he’s gone or if it’s unfortunate that I never had that father/son bond that so many of my friends have.

That's tough. I feel for you. You do what you feel is right. If you need answers ask the questions. If you need to express anger, don't feel bad. You don't owe him anything but he may be the only person who can answer some things. You may feel better if you get some stuff off your chest. Or dance on his grave if that's what you need. Either way do your best to get what you need and stay strong. I wish you luck my friend.

On the theme of dealing with a parent's death, I suggest you give a listen and reaction to How Could You Leave Us?, by NF. NF is often compared to Ren (or vice versa) and Eminem, from whom he took inspiration early on. The song is excellently evocative of the emotions early in the grief process, particularly for a relationship that was fraught with issues.
