Call it nostalgia, but I still love the 'sound' of MIDI tracks. My hunch it is along the same lines of the visual concept of less is more, similar to how old graphical styles such as sprites allowed me 'fill in the blanks'. This was most apparent to me recently with 'ActRaiser Renaissance', where Yuzo Koshiro also included a MIDI version of all of the new tracks [utilizing the original SNES soundboard!]. After flipping between both, I actually preferred gameplay with the MIDI playlist.

Yeah, the 90s sound of MIDI devices definitely is a beast of its own. I have a plan of making remakes of our OST into that soundscape at some point. It'll be a real fun project. I have some real MIDI hardware from the late 90s that would suit perfectly. For example the Roland XV-5080.
