I feel like the first ever backflip by Cam McQueen (I could be wrong about that but I remember watching that show and they said it was the first) was probably one of the biggest turning points because after that happened everyone tried backflips and now they are a part of almost every freestyle run.

The moonwalk and two wheel skills competition actually started in Rigs of Rods. You'll see in some videos of the Feld shop/Digger's Dungeon that there is a custom monster truck sim running Rigs of Rods - sometimes it's used in promo material, you'll just need a keen eye to spot it. It uses a custom truck & physics not available for download that was created exclusively for Feld as a driver training tool by a legit simulation company. Their decal can be found on some trucks, just need to know what you're looking for. They don't advertise themselves publicly. Prior to the sim being physically set up in Feld's shop, a lot of the younger drivers had a copy of ROR + the truck for their home gaming PC's. It was essentially Ryan Anderson, Coty Saucier, and the two simulation developers goofing around in a private online server and realizing they could do stoppies and other crazy two wheel tricks. So the first two wheel skills competition in MJ history was technically a couple of Monster Jam drivers and some european game devs messing around in RoR late at night. I'm paraphrasing here but they basically went "oh shit we might be on to something" and tried it in the real trucks a few days later and opened a giant can of worms, and now it's part of an event.

That is a good idea. The backflip ramps have gotten better for the drivers over time. Like during the first 2021 show in Huston TX, when Great Clips Mohawk Warrior used the newer backflip ramp and broke an axle on the landing.

If you want to bring up the start of that evolution, Gothenburg Sweden in 2007. That ramp was the moment it became possible.

This is very cool and I agree 100%. A lot of people might think it was the frontflip from Lee O'Donnell in VP Racing Fuels Mad Scientist that changed the sport but that has never been done before or since. Ryan's first successful moonwalk in Syracuse really changed the sport becsue now you can't go to a monster truck show without seeing this move.

I think that the two wheel skills is a Great add on to what is monster jams bread and butter. Which is racing and freestyle. It's a good showing for true talent for those go see who has the best truck control. However I can see it get stale after awhile, same with the backflip. I remember seeing McQueens first backflip and being so excited about it. Now it's kind of become a given that you will see one. Doesn't feel like a risk anymore cause of how much everyone practices and tries them now, as apposed to when I believe in 2012-2013 the ramps to do a backflip were still primitive. Although I don't think two wheel skill will ever get down to that level, as year by year drivers make them more and more entertaining.

(Ik this is old) I think I will solve everyone’s opinion just by this alone, so I know seeing a truck on two wheels is amazing and just groundbreaking. Unbelievable the only downside is seeing drivers like Camden Murphy being one of the masters at putting a truck on two wheels sitting it there for 20 seconds, and deciding to reverse it up a ramp which we’ve seen for years on indrivers like Ryan Anderson he knows how to get everybody on his feet with his bicycle. The moonwalk, which is a great factor than just sitting on two wheels for the whole 30 seconds Anderson donuts and wheelies shows that some of the old-school moves still can win.

The moment Monster Jam changed forever was when they stopped doing business with Bigfoot 4x4 and monopolized the monster truck industry. They took the focus off racing and trying to be a sport to focusing on freestyle and becoming sports entertainment. To me I lost touch with monster trucks when you see a 10000 - 12000-pound monster truck doing double backflips.

Grave digger, 2005, he did not do anything, once he was upside down the officials shut him off, you can hear the throttle stop while he is still rotating when the nose hits the dirt. It’s the pure weight of the truck on the rear end that pulls it down.
