There’s no inspections in Montana if that’s what you’re asking. Same with South Dakota. That’s why many register their cars in these states to get around the strict inspections.

So if I’m hearing you clearly, if my AZ license tag is expired, and I need to renew it, can I go to Vermont or on their website, renew my registration, and get the new plate while continuing to live here in AZ? I got a Toyota supra 6spd manual on krder and I live in Illinois. Iys a 60k car and still Illinois charge 8.75% sales price. So i was thinking wjen it will get done and shipped to dealer abd picked up by me. Also nobody is talking about South Carolina. It's a Max $500 fee there and way less conspicuous than Montana plates. For me it'd be worth registering in SC just to avoid the eye in the sky. Nobody is paying attention to SC plates. Am I wrong?

A friend of mine who owns multiple super cars and lives in Los Angeles was well aware of the Montana loophole and told me that in CA if they see Montana plates on a sportscar they'll pull you over for whatever reason they can and try to find some issue they can tax you for. The law is paid by your tax dollars and apparently they don't like it when you take money out of their pocket by not paying all the CA taxes and fees...

You don’t have to get a commercial policy for your llc in MT but if you register your car in MT, you’ll need an insurance policy out of there with the car being garaged In AL or wherever it is most the time and add a seasonal address.

It varies from car to car. You’d still insure your vehicle in AZ but have the llc as the additional interest in MT. You’d be saving on taxes

good luck trying this. If you have a car registered in Montana but primarily is used in another state you are usually going to be subject to the state tax in which is it primarily used. you might get away with it but if you get caught doing this you could be subject to massive fines.

I’m even considering this for a $60K purchase because of both Missouri sales tax and personal property tax. It adds up quick. Is there any notable expenses I’m overlooking? (Aside from the LLC creation and annual tax return prep.) Do you have to pay more than usual for insurance? Are financing and/or leasing costs more expensive because it’s in an LLC? I’ll do some research, but if you have any immediate reactions, I’d be interested to hear them.

You’d insure the vehicle wherever it’s garaged and put the Montana llc as an endorsement. The Montana LLC is just for titling and doesn’t have anything to do with where or how it’s insured. All you’re doing is creating a tax shelter for no sales tax, no PP tax and no inspections. Each year you pay about $150 for the registered agent to file your corp docs and keep the LLC in place in montana. A great place to start is dirtlegal.com.

There’s one huge thing often overlooked! If your registering a vehicle with gvwr over 10k lbs (think f350 or similar) you have now created a commercial motor vehicle subject to CMV inspection, you need dot numbers (unless your in Montana), and IFTA.

Mr. Steve, Great video, thanks a lot for the overview. One thing I'm curious about that I don't see anybody talking about is: can you use a Montana LLC to make a "registration round trip"? For instance, acquire vehicle, register acquired vehicle in Montana, then sell it back to yourself for a nominal amount (maybe put $1,000 or so on the bill of sale) in your actual state of residence, then register your vehicle in actual state of residence. California has been cracking down on out of state plates and this seems to be a potential way around it. Have you ever seen anybody do that? Any pitfalls to doing something like this? Cheers, Henry

That really defeats the whole purpose. States like CA have extra inspections and requirements like SMOG testing which is why they use a state like MT. Something like what you’re describing makes more sense to do in South Dakota where you can obtain a permanent virtual address.

My buddy in Utah just got his 2024 G25 Paragon impounded on Lake Powell for having it registered with a Montana LLC. He now has to register the boat in Utah and pay the Utah sales tax before he can get it out of impound 😢 The water cops there look for boats with Montana tags, now I can't go wake boarding for the rest of the season 😢😢

You would get a personal policy unless you have a need to go the commercial route. An example of this - you get a bunch of trucks and your llc is called Brads tree service. Then, going Commercial is the way to go.

You wouldn’t pay sales tax because you’d be registering in MT. Each state gets their fair share of taxes in multiple other avenues. This is a legal way to use the system to your benefit
