The storyline is good. I remember reading this years ago. The narrator’s character voices sound like actors from an old, black & white, B movie. It would be so much better with realistic narration.

I don't know for sure but I'm thinking it's about whether the narrator feels they can manage changing their voices to adapt from female to male along with the accent that goes along with that particular character. I assume (the narrator) would have to read the entire novel carefully, then decide if they felt capable of changing voices quickly enough for the story to unfold smoothly for the listener. I've listened to many audiobooks. The older Western novels and almost exclusively narrated by men. The romance novels seem to more likely be read by women. Either way it's got to be a hell of a challenge, don't you think? I can't imagine even attempting it. Nora writes some great novels. I have read most of them. Now that I'm unable to read so well, I sure do appreciate the narrators willingness to do so for the public.

Because the writer is a woman, and the lead character is also a woman. In writing, there's something called point of view. In this book, the POV is mostly female. In Black Hills, the POV is mostly male, so a male reader in that book.
