Just discovered your channel. I came to Alaska in 1982 for six months-I'm still here. It's a common story, people come for a short adventure, fall in love, and then never leave.

Having lived in Alaska most of my life, I understand the pull many people have to live in Alaska. You’re doing it the right way, if you’re going as a sabbatical and not burning your bridges in Libby. I now live west and a tad south of you now. The winters are colder and a bit longer than here. People get a romanized idea of what living in the land of the midnight sun is going to be like, after visiting once or twice. As long as you remember the old saying that says, “All that glitters is not gold”. You shouldn’t be disappointed. And you believe you are being led by the Lord, and HE never disappoints, challenges, but doesn’t disappoint!!

I was there in the 90's and watched the start of the Iditarod. I learned that around Anchorage The temperature wasn't much different than Wisconsin where I live. The ocean moderates the extreme cold say by Fairbanks. I learned of a singer name Hobo Jim (who recently passed) that I still listen to. I believe he became a troubadour to Alaska as John Denver did to Colorado. One needs dreams and adventures to follow and really, "This world is not my home..." enjoy your adventure! And thanks for sharing something positive and uplifting!

I know what you mean about needing a sabbatical. I am on a sabbatical from the nursery at church. God bless you. Pricilla, I read your Dad's book. I grew up in Pompeii which is not far from Elsie. I went to the Mennonite Church. Now I'm not there now, I was excommunicated from that church.

You will be amazed at every moment of your time and I will for sure be watching and enjoying every posting. Everyone needs to visit or live in AK. God bless your new adventure! I so wish I was going with you! PS - check the time frame of becoming a resident so you aren’t surprised as we were.

My husband just applied for a transfer in Fairbanks. To no surprise a recruiting associate said she had been living there for 20 years and had a long list of reasons you should not come there or anchorage (cost of living, crime rate, the winters are really hard you can't even go out in the snow therefore stuck indoors all the time, it's dangerous and if you have kids you will be stuck in doors most of the year and they only have about 2 months of good weather outside) and basically a lot of people think it's nice the first few years but get wearing after that. And she and her husband are leaving as soon as possible.. Do you agree with this having lived there? I'm super bummed, I guess it's easy to glorify Alaska. My husband is now turned off to the idea.
