THE PATH OF MEATTE
Departure: the path is easily accessible from the Valle dei Lebi and from the paths that reach it starting from Semonzo and San Liberale;
Itinerary: path of the Meatte, the Malga Archeson or the Casone Boccaor, both leading to the Val delle Mure, continues uphill towards the ridge that divides the provinces of Treviso and Belluno and reaches a short beech wood, from here you reach the stretch between Cima Grappa and Croce dei Lebi;
Description of the route: The Meatte path: the variety of the landscape in which small wet grassy channels and dry ridges alternate has made this path a botanical garden that contains in itself the most peculiar landscape features of Grappa and many of its rare floral species . The result is a singular landscape populated by entities not linked to particular altitudinal bands. In fact, thermophilic species coexist that invade the sunniest bumps and microthermal species located in the coolest and most shady gorges, where the snow remains until late spring. In particular, here live the Campanula carnica, a vast repertoire of small ferns and other species that love these lands.
HISTORY :
With the breaking of the Italian front at Caporetto, Monte Grappa became the first line of the mountain sector between Brenta and Piave. The Italian troops after a dramatic retreat reached Grappa.
THE SACRARY
It rises on the summit of the Grappa massif at an altitude of 1776 m. s.l.m. It was built in 1935, designed by the architect Giovanni Greppi and the sculptor Giannino Castiglioni. The central body of the monument, which houses the mortal remains of 12615 Fallen, of which 10332 are unknown, consists of five concentric circles, each four meters high and circumscribed by a circular shelf ten wide. The remains of the Fallen identified are arranged in alphabetical order and kept in individual niches, covered with bronze plates. Those of the 10332 unknown are gathered in larger common urns, which alternate with single tombs. On the top of the monument there is a shrine, the Sanctuary of the Madonnina del Grappa. From the square of the small temple, the heroic path winds around 250 meters to the Portale Roma, between two rows of stone on which the names of the places linked to the most famous facts of the grappa battles are carved. Between the 4th and 5th circles, in a central position, there is the tomb of General Giardino, who before he died expressed his will to be buried up there among his soldiers. La Madonnina del Grappa, blessed by Cardinal Sarto, then Pope Pius X. Now it is a destination of devoted pilgrimage on the first Sunday of August. The Rome portal that stands at the end of the Via Eroica was designed and built by the architect Alessandro Limongelli. Above the Rome portal there is an observatory from which it is possible to observe the wide surrounding landscape and the points of greatest historical interest. In the sector to the north-east of the Rome Portal, the remains of 10295 Austro-Hungarian soldiers were reunited.
