@0902kaliente I can see your point but remember this is an introduction to multiplication. Montessori's theory is that the child first gets a concerte view of things. (that is a physical manipulation of the subject-which is what we have here) and this goes for any subject.... then when the child has grasped this concept, they move towards the abstract, which would be doing the sum on the paper and in their head. so its concrete to abstract.

Great material! I've taught to my son the addition and substraction operators. This material fits perfectly with the methodology that we are following.

@bhope369 The way it always works in montessori education is that you go from concrete to abstract. This way the children get a good concept of how things work, in this case multiplications. But of course they will eventually learn to make these multiplications without the material.

@Irisheyes77christy I'm not being rude just providing another point of view....Why?... just wondering what the benefit of doing it quicker would be? I mean I'm slow at balancing my checkbook, but I still do a good job at it with very little mistakes. The only benefit I could see to doing it quicker would be for those "wonderful", timed, standardized tests. I believe it's good to do the job to the best of your ability and that's what really matters.

This is great. I just had a question: will the child be able to do the math problem without the multiplication table? Can they apply the idea and do the problem with pencil and paper only?

I love it. It seems so simple starting this way.

@0902kaliente.. (ran out of space)... It would be like trying to discribe a.. i dont know.... a spatchula to a child.. it would be very difficult for a child to try to picture it or even imagine what one could use it for.. but if you give the spatchula to the child they will grasp the concept a lot quicker! hope that helps a bit!
