Montessori Colour Box 2 - Detecting Colour Blindness in Toddlers

Montessori colour box 2 is a Sensorial Exercise. A box containing eleven pairs of tablets in the following colours:🌹
1. Red
2. Blue
3. Yellow
4. Orange
5. Brown
6. Green
7. Grey
8. White
9. Purple
10.Black
11.Pink🌳
Some of the objectives of the exercise are
1. To help show up handicaps - dyslexia and colour blindness.
Rapid naming dyslexia is easily detected when teaching the names of colours using the Montessori Colour boxes. Children with this type of disability struggle with the ability to rapidly name colours when presented with them. 🌹
With colour blindness, the most common form of struggle is with the red/green colours. Some children struggle with identifying brown and purple. Others confuse black as dark green or dark blue.

3. To develop the child's visual perception of colours 🌹
The approximate age for the Colour Box 2 is from 3 years onwards 🌳
The control of error is the visual sense. The child will see the mismatch and correct his/her error(s)🌹

Informative content! I have a question, are there other colours mixup that might signify that a child has colour blindness asides from mixing up the colours red and green that you mentioned in the video?

Thanks for your feedback. The colour black can be confused as dark blue or dark green but the most common form is red/green. Same problems can arise across the whole colour range affecting these colours too; oranges, browns, purples, pinks and greys.

In the event that the child cannot differentiate between red and green and other colours, what then should be done? How does the colour box 2 help to detect dyslexia?

Thanks for your feedback. The teacher should notify the caregiver about this development and the caregiver should in turn inform their primary health doctor or their pediatrician about this, so that necessary adjustment can be made. Rapid naming Dyslexia is easily detected when teaching the names of colours using Montessori Colour boxes. Children with this type of handicap struggle with the ability to rapidly name colours, letters and numbers when presented with them. I understand that with some children it might take them a little bit of time to grasp some skills and concepts but when it becomes a continuous struggle to come up with the correct word then help should be sought 🙂
