- Peter Monteverdi (* 7. Juni 1934 in Binningen/BL, Schweiz; † 4. Juli 1998 ebenda) war ein Schweizer Privatrennfahrer, Autobauer und Gründer der Automarke Monteverdi.
Seit 1954 war Monteverdi Inhaber einer Lkw-Werkstatt und Auto-Garage in Binningen. Vermittelt durch sein Engagement im Rennsport, erhielt er 1957 die Konzession, Ferrari in der Schweiz zu vertreiben und wurde damit der weltweit jüngste Ferrari-Händler. Ab 1967 baute Monteverdi in Binningen (mit Unterstützung einiger italienischer Karossiers) eine Reihe eigener Straßensportwagen, die zunächst unter dem Namen MBM (Monteverdi Binningen Motors) erscheinen sollten, letztlich aber als Monteverdi verkauft wurden.
Am Genfer Autosalon 1971 werden erstmals das Coupé 375, das Cabriolet 375 C, sowie auch der "375 High Speed 2+2" präsentiert. Sämtliche Modelle sind mit einem amerikanischen 7,2-Liter-Motor in V8-Anordnung von Chrysler ausgestattet, der problemlos auf 375 PS kommt - daher sein Name. Die von Fissore entworfenen Karosserien werden in Italien gebaut, wo auch die Montage der Wagen stattfindet.
Die Sportwagen der Reihe High Speed 375 blieben bis 1976 im Programm, danach stellte Monteverdi sein Angebot auf luxuriöse Geländewagen und exklusive Limousinen um. 1984 - nach anderen Quellen 1987 - endete die Serienfertigung. Das Werk in Binningen wurde in ein Automobilmuseum umgewandelt.
Anfang der 1990er-Jahre versuchte Peter Monteverdi noch einmal, mit mehreren Projekten im Automobilgeschäft Fuß zu fassen. Einerseits ließ er mehrere Kopien seines atemberaubenden Sportwagens Hai 450 GTS herstellen, andererseits übernahm er 1990 den britischen Rennstall Onyx, den er ein halbes Jahr lang ohne Erfolg betrieb. Die Überreste dieses Projekts wurden in einem weiteren Straßensportwagen namens Hai 650F1 verwertet, der von 1992 bis 1994 in angeblich sechs Exemplaren verkauft wurde. Die Wagen mit Cosworth-Achtzylindermotor hatten in Europa keine Straßenzulassung.
Ab Mitte der 1990er-Jahre zog sich Monteverdi zunehmend nach Marokko zurück. Er starb 1998 - im Alter von 64 Jahren - in Binningen an Krebs. Sein Lebensgefährte Paul Berger ist noch immer Inhaber der Monteverdi Automobile AG.

Wow, That Palm Beach is gorgeous. That car for me is more beautiful then both a Daytona Spider, and a Ghilbi spider.

He was a pioneer in the 1970s, telling Enzo Ferrari (who didn't believe it) that there was a demand for sporty GTs with automatic transmissions - and subsequently designing and building his 375L and 375/4 models, cars that are still very beautiful today. Enzo eventually realized this and that's how we ended up with the 400 / 412 GT models, and the others that followed (Maranello, Scaglietti). He also saw the huge potential for luxury SUVs, and his Monteverdi Safari was well priced and competitive compared to the Range Rover. If he had had the production capacity he could have sold a lot more. He was certainly an entrepreneur and a brave man, not accepting the dictate from Enzo (for that alone he deserves respect) and competing with the big industry boys despite very limited resources. In the late 70s and 80, he designed a lot of mainstream cars, including the Ford Sierra (uncredited), and of course the 4-door Range Rover.

The line of the Monteverdi 375L is simply beautiful, out of fashion. Too bad that what says Mr Berger is not underlined in English for us non-German speakers...

I have the 375 car in Dinky Toys format. Very good looking, as stylish as an Italian would draw the lines. The car was so long that it would have been a problem to climb to the Crans Montana ski center with it but once there would have been as nice as the Astons or Maseratis. The deception is the Chrysler engine which surely must have been so poor on responses.
