"Montreal 1896-1914: The Canadian Metropolis"
Paul-André Linteau, Université du Québec à Montréal
In the early 20th century, Montreal enjoys one of the greatest periods of growth in its entire history. On the eve of World War I, its population has already passed the half-million mark. The city is a hive of activity, having reached the apex of its growth as the Canadian metropolis. Its big businesses take part in developing the Canadian West, where they set up numerous branch offices. They are also involved in exploiting natural resources and in the expansion of the manufacturing sector in Quebec and into Ontario. St-James Street becomes the symbol of financial power in Montreal.

Montreal, the Canadian Metropolis, just like New York City was the American Metropolis. And just like New York City, Montreal was the Canadian Big Apple, but only until the 1970s, when Toronto's population grew above Montreal's population and the French language laws of 1974 and 1977, began the 2 decade long exodus of English speaking citizens and not just people with English as their mother tongue, who made up 25.6% of the population of Montreal Island, but also some immigrants (about 15% of Montreal Island), who had assimilated into the English speaking community. The population who spoke French as their mother tongue on Montreal was 59.4% and thus, only a slight majority. I think in the city of Montreal itself however, French speakers made up a bigger percentage of the population and English speakers a slightly smaller percentage of the population, but I might be wrong. Although I am aware that the last English speaking mayor of Montreal, James John Edmund Guerin, who born and died in Montreal in 1932, served from 1910 to 1912, when the city of Montreal proper, still had a tradition of switching between an English speaking and French speaking Mayor every 2 or 4 years.

La vaste majorité de la population restait pauvre alors que depuis une trentaine d'années la richesse est mieux répartie.

Funny how as soon as you let the city go full French, it plummets.

I had to leave because although we could speak to the parents and children in french at the childcare centre we started , we knew we wouldn't be able to do the paper work in french. Sadly we left. I guess Levesque dreamed they could prosper but how could they, surrounded by all english speaking provences and states. Sad , again.
