One of the largest and most important infrastructure projects ever built in North America, the new Samuel-de Champlain Bridge is an engineering marvel, built to last 125 years, connecting the island of Montreal with the South Shore region. Completed in July 2019 after only 4 years of construction to replace the degraded 57-year old original structure, the new bridge measures 3.4km in length, 170 metres in height and a staggering 60 metres wide, making it the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world that uses two planes of cables. The superstructure contains four lanes in both directions including a bus lane, a bike & pedestrian path and a corridor for the new REM light metro. With $20 billion in goods and nearly 60 million vehicles crossing it every year, the bridge is Canada's busiest and a vital economic link in North America.

Love Montreal. When I can get back I'll be walking this bridge. And then I'll hit another landmark, The Montreal Pool Room. And then Schwartz's. And then La Sucerie de la Montagne. Getting hungry. Miss that city.

It's already great for us in Brossard and yet it's far from being all over, the trains haven't begun to ride on it and they are still working on infrastructure on the land. It'll be so great once it's finished.

Well my friend, fact is Quebec has a terrible history of building and maintaining bridges. Just go and read some old newspapers.

Old and new Champlain bridge has been constant for most of my life. The old bridge was just 5 years old when my family left Ville Lasalle and moved to South Shore St. Hubert in 1967. After 30 years in Toronto, I returned to South Shore Brossard in 2019 and new bridge is part of my daily commute to work. As young boy I would always ask my father how they built old Champlain bridge over water. It truly is engineering marvel how they build these magnificent structures over water particular in place with extreme weather patterns throughout the year.

Correction… this is not a bridge into Canada. This bridge is from mainland Quebec onto the island of Montreal. Yes Montreal is actually an island.
Жыл бұрын
Correct! Most Americans and trucks use it to access Montreal from the States however, which is why it's considered a huge link between the US and Canada.

You got one thing wrong... It does not have a bus lane. The breakdown lane is being used as a bus lane temporarily while the REM is being built.

It's interesting that Montreal seems to accomplish the most with projects that have a very tight deadline. Expo 67 had to be built fast because Moscow had pulled out. The bridge had to be built fast because the old bridge was falling apart. Both Expo 67 and the Samuel de Champlain bridge were open for business 4 years after breaking ground. Both were notable for using well established designs and engineering principles for their construction. When given time, large scale construction projects in Montreal seem to get derailed very fast. The 1976 Olympic Games were awarded to Montreal in 1970, but construction didn't start until 1973 with a ludicrously complicated design that didn't take into account the weak condition of the soil at the construction site. Completion of the tower had to be skipped, and a good thing too since the continuation of the construction after the Games under the original design revealed the tower's footing couldn't handle the extra weight! The construction of the REM seems to have broken this curse. It still had a few rough moments, but most of the construction has been progressing steadily, and trains are already being tested on the Montreal-Brossard route.

the new bridge is great but i do miss the iconic view of the original champlain bridge quite a bit just because of how iconic it was and how well it blended with montreals style. i saw a cool image of the old an new bridge standing next to each other and kind of wish they kept it like that.

There is also going to be a public transit monorail linking the south shore to Montreal, Another is under construction linking the west side off-island commuters to Montreal (Hudsen, Vaudreuil, St Lazare...) to Dorval

Indeed but it’s not a monorail but rather a light metro line! It’s going to transform the city

and it's not to Hudson , Vaudreuil, Saint-Lazare (if you're talking of the REM) because it will stop at sainte-anne-de-bellevue on the west end of montreal island !! if you talking about de monorail it's been a while this project abandoned ;)

They also need to make one to link the west shore to island of montreal. This summer, the 40 was closed and it used to take 2 hours just to get by the bridge on the 20.

As a daily user of this bridge, it's missing about 2 or 3 lanes on each side. It always baffles me when I'm stuck in traffic every fucking day on this bridge... Why build for today and not for tomorrow? They keep insisting on public transit but news flash, there will ALWAYS be more and more cars forever until the end of time. Same for highway 10, should be minimum 6 lanes all the way to at least highway 35. Same for high way 30, between highway 10 and Varennes, it should be way more than 2 lanes. I could go on and on, but the rundown is the highway system in Quebec is lacking big time, always stuck in traffic because of terrible overlapping lane and highway access and missing lanes. Maybe the solution is pay more taxes (this is a joke)
