Some folks sent me questions and left comments and wanted to address them and make a new blend while doing so.
First off, how do you decide what blenders work well together? Trial and error. Building a blend depends on your tastes, what you enjoy and is subjective. Certain things go well together i.e. Dark Burley and Perique. IMO.
How much casing goes on a blend? Not much, like cologne a little goes a long way. The casing should be a compliment to the blend, like salt and pepper. Too much takes away from the tobacco flavor, again IMO.
How to get started? The short answer is look at the ingredients of your favorite blend. Go to smokingpipes.com or pipesandcigars.com and order a small amount (1-2 ounces) and then sample each one individually. Make notes on what you taste and what you like and dislike about it. Once you decide what you like, go from there. This is your blend, you get to decide what you like or don't!

Great video. It’s great to see the process. I always wondered about how much alcohol was put on. Ardfinnan as you know is a favorite of mine good to hear it mentioned. I’ve blended and pressed a few times. I actually have one in the press now. I may vacuum seal it after it’s out just to see if that does anything for it…….

I learned to work with what is available and without having to alter with casings too much. I buy perique in whole leaf because it's as close to C&D perique without availability issues. I source everything else just like you do. I will case perique with food grade produces to steer the natural flavors in perique to being more pronounced but not with sweeteners. That allows me to use more perique in a blend due to it being tamed down also. Currently my most successful blend is similar to Mac Barens Dark Twist but in loose form. I had an idea for creating my version of Elizabethan Mixture but unfortunately the gawith and hoggarth dark virginia cavendish is being discontinued and it's the closest to the dark ready rubbed virignia that I've found to ve similar to what's in Elizabethan Mixture so I'll have to experiment more. But I enjoy blending.its a nice change of pace vs buying tin after tin.

Another great video Jim!! Was interesting to hear you talk about Ardfinnan a I was smoking a bowl of that while watching.. wonderful blend by the way!!
