CORRECTED TRANSLATION: Lady: [Freddie said] "I heard Monserrat Caballé sing and I couldn't avoid the impulse of looking for her" And he came here and found you because... that truly was some kind of love. Montserrat: Well, more than love, I think it was admiration that he felt after seeing that I could do certain things that maybe he would've liked to been able to do, because he did some of them. L: He had a great voice. M: Yes, he had a baritone voice, and when I asked him "Why don't we record a duo between baritone and soprano" in his house in London he said "No, [what would happen] if people saw me singing for real?" L: (Laughs) M: I mean, that word got stuck with me, "for real". He didn't sing... L: ...truly serious stuff? M: Yes, exactly. L: Like great sheet music by great composers. M: Yes, clearly. And I proposed him the duo of La Traviata, the one between the father and her, because he was a baritone and he didn't... well, he said no... he said no. Because it would seem to him like he was betraying his audience and his people. And he was a composer, he was an excellent pianist. (Cut) Montserrat's Niece: We were at Freddie's house and there were days when [we would stay up] until 6 or 7 am because after having dinner, they'd go over where the piano was and he'd start playing the piano and singing, Montserrat would start improvising. And it truly was... an incredible party. To Freddie, Montserrat was something... extraterrestrial. He loved her and admired her so much that he made sure everything was perfect. That whenever we arrived at the hotel, there were roses in the room, that we had everything and lacked nothing. (CUT) L: You were preparing to sing a duet at the Opening of the Olympic Games, [but by then] he was no more, he had passed away the year before that. M: Yes and he had told me. He said to me two years before "I'm not gonna make it, I'm not gonna make it". We were at a recording studio, doing some final recordings, which were the last things he ever recorded, and he said "Well, I'm not going to do Barcelona" and I stood still and asked "Why?", I thought that he didn't want to do it. It's true that he had slimmed down quite a lot and he was very deteriorated. And he said "Because with AIDS I cannot think of having a future in two years." And so on... But yes, he said that he would've liked me to sing the Aria from Phantom Of The Opera ['Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again']. And I told him I would record it, and I recorded it for him in the studio and then sent it to him.

This is a Pieta. It's about love, really, isn't it? Love in those categories which a conventional world ignores. Queer for diva. Fat girl for beautiful boy. Human who had had her reasonably allotted years, for human who hadn't. Hedonist for priestess. Victim of dedication for victim of prejudice. Rock music for belcanto. Mother for son. Nurse for patient. Lonely for lonely. Incredible performer for incredible performer. Childless for childless. Heart-breaking, that the world still misunderstands such love. But mould-breaking, in that these two, Freddie and Monserrat, found a place together where they could shout it. And to find that, you have to open your heart, as they did. Art, music is sometimes the only place to do so. Bless both of them for revealing such love, so triumphantly, so death-defyingly. Immortal, for immortal.

Thank you for doing this, I had never seen this and it's interesting. And very moving too. Freddie was supposed to have a baritone voice ? I am very surprised. He had a very wide range, but I considered him as a tenor, first and he could sing like a counter-tenor, as he proved it on the incredible B-side "Exercises in Free Love", that became "Ensueno" on Barcelona, with lyrics by Mrs Caballé. I liked a lot Montserrat Caballé, actually I knew her before the album with Freddie, she was so famous. And I knew Queen before Montserrat Caballé, i think... I saw her live once, in a recital in Paris. So when they did this album together, it was heaven for me. I still wish it had been a tad different (it would have been better with a real orchestra but this has been done now) and a little bit longer with maybe a classical music adaptation but it's still a very good album. As for the translation, maybe there's one or two mistakes in the English translation I couldn't figure out but thanks to some comments, I understood... AIDS instead of "eight"... nevermind, as a whole, it's nice you did this.
@susandrakenviller36832 жыл бұрын
He had a tenor voice, maybe she meant to have him do a baritone duet with her because I don't think he would be able to do a tenor duet in an opera style. There is really nothing I can hear in Freddy's voice that sounds like a baritone. Also sometimes great singers are bad teachers.

It's really interesting she says she wanted him to sing baritone bc I just read about a study on his voice that indicates he was probably actually a baritone. I really wish he would've agreed. It's crazy to think of how good he is singing OUTSIDE his natural register. What would he have sounded like in it?!
@brendant193 жыл бұрын
That doesn't seem right to me. He casually sang Bb4's in a number of songs with no real training. Seems reasonable to conclude he had a tenor voice. How was this study you refer to conducted exactly?
@susandrakenviller36833 жыл бұрын
Freddy is definitely not an operatic baritone which you can hear from his timbre, the lower notes and where the voice enters the passagio. In some people it is more difficult to make the distinction but not Freddy Mercury.
