Verdi wrote this role specifically for Jenny Lind , and he incorporated lots trills in the cabaletta in order to showcase her trills, for which she was famous. As great as Caballe was, one of her few technical shortcomings were her inability to ever sing a real trill. The singer who truly rules in this scene, especially the cabaletta is the young Joan Sutherland (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnSVi2drq8d7l9U). More recently, Lisette Oropesa has done a beautiful job with the scene as well (kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJnIZqSVg7qkl8k), as she seems to be the only singer before the public who has a complete mastery of the trill (as well as all other fine-points of bel canto).

Beautiful voice and almost perfect technique except for the absolutely lack of a real trill. I agree 100% with one of the commentators here: Joan Sutherland nails this aria, note by note on the score.
