Montserrat Caballe Funny Moments on and out of Stage!

Montserrat loved to laugh. One night in a recital at the ROH in 1981 some people started to take pictures with their cameras and flashes. She just said very nicely please no " flasher". When she realised what she had said well she just could not stop laughing and the entire audience joined her . It must of lasted for a good 10 minutes. It is one of the most wonderful memory I have of her. Not only was she of the the greatest soprano of the 20th century

For all the incredible (literally) vocal and musical things she accomplished, many fans travelled the world to hear her. And, those lucky enough to get the opportunity to meet their great idol in person usually entered her presence with the awe of approaching a (their) true goddess. Invariably after meeting her and succumbing to her charms and effervescent laughter, and recognizing the "person" they had just met, they would leave with that memory overwriting their previous expectations. So strong was her personality that those who knew her would say: "She ALSO sings !"

Okay - I still love La Stupenda but I think I have found my favourite soprano ever. Just like Pavarotti will always hold the very special place in my heart (God i miss him...) - I'm sure that nobody will ever top Caballé for me. These two...I pray I meet them in heaven

Funny (peculiar) how Caballé lived a long and happy life with his husband, who she loved (she always changed the lyrics of the _Carceleras_ from _Las Hijas de Zebedeo,_ by Chapí and, instead of _"ese pícaronazo que me marea"_ she used to say _"ese pícaro maño"),_ Bernabé Martí, but after their deaths they have been separated probably forever. Caballé is buried in her parents' grave in Sant Andreu's Cementery, Barcelona, whereas Martí is also with his parents but in a little town close to Zaragoza.

What students need to learn from these clips is that artists from her era and before were able to converse in many languages. Caballe is heard here speaking Spanish, German, Italian, French, and English. Schools pump out singers with basic diction understanding of the languages they are singing in, yet are headed for a hard lesson when they arrive in Europe and expect a translator to be present.
