I remember perfectly...that applause was so long and bravos so loud,after about 7 min, Montse ,ever so slowly ,raised her hand ,palm to the public as if gently reminding them the performance had to continue. After a few seconds they reluctantly quieted down finally...I watched , a knot in my throat, from the left wing...that was indeed one of the most memorable moments in my career. I was Procida in those performances .

Mr. Diaz, i was there that evening. with the outrageous good luck to be sitting behind Terry McEwen and his friend Renata Tebaldi. That evening was one of the greatest i ever spent in the house. and i remember the reaction to Madame Caballé gently raising her hand to stop the applause, elegant, but useless... lol. thank you for sharing that memory.

i was at the Met's first night of this opera, january 31, 1974. hearing Madame Caballé that night in this aria remains one of the most magical, other dimensional, experiences i have ever had in the opera house. the ovation which followed clocked in at over 7 minutes! and i was sitting directly behind Renata Tebaldi........good lord! B L I S S !

Take a look on the one by María Callas in 1951. If this is amazing, the one by Callas in unsurpassable. I love Caballé too, but Maria is amazing in all what she performs, and more before lose weight❤️

She sang this much better at the Met. This photos above may lead you to think this was the Met performance, but it isn't, as phrases are broken that were not broken at the Met, indeed her incredible breadth control is what made the Met performance so great. This is more than likely from Barcelona. The pictures, including that of Levine, are misleading as Barcelona, if I recall was conducted by Eve Queler.
