Monty swings like nobody. He is an amazing musician who is most respected in Europe, less so in the USA, where he was always overshadowed by Oscar Peterson. I once met him at the jazz showcase in Chicago where he performed for 25 people. I asked him if I could have a lesson with him. He just smiled at me and told me "don't take lessons, just keep listening". Then his bass player told me that Monty simply can't teach anything. He plays only by ear. An amazing talent!

Oscar, un animal al piano, solo eclipsa a quien se deja. Monty, es otro animal al piano. Benditos los animales! E. Garner, A. Tatum y muchos otros, más animales al piano. Bill Evans, otro. En fin. La MÚSICA es lo que interesa.

Delightful anecdote. Thanks for sharing! I wrote Sinatra a two-page letter December 1992. He responded with an enthusiastic note "Thank you very much . . . I greatly appreciate your interest in my music . . . It was so nice of you to take the time to write!" He closed with those same words from Montry: "Keep Listening!"

@@MarkBlackburnWPG I ran into Monty over the Christmas holiday while standing in line...he was right behind me...I don't do the fan-boy routine but for him??? Heak Yeah!!! I've been listening to him since Love and Sunshine. Great musician, great spirit...and great person all around. And he gave me the same advise..."Keep listening!" I have, and I can't stop.

Oscar Peterson helped get Monty his first record deal (with Oscar’s label, MPS); I believe Monty considered Oscar a friend and mentor.
