"Monty" Fox Sitcom 1994 Part 1 of 2 Debut Episode Henry Winkler David Schwimmer

"Monty" was a short-lived sitcom on Fox in early 1994. This show starred Henry Winkler as a Rush Limbaugh-style talk show host. David Schwimmer (Friends) and David Krumholtz (Numbers) play his 2 sons. This show lasted about 5 aired episodes and then was cancelled, like a lot of the Fox sitcoms from that era. I do not have the intro (if there was one), and if there was any footage before that I do not have it, nor the full credits. This does include a PSA with Henry Winkler standing in front of a "Monty" director's chair.

Watching this is like being in an alternate reality! I’d never heard of this show, till I read Winkler’s bio in Leonard Maltin’s Movie Encyclopedia. Hooray for You Tube! Bizarre. Fonzie’s a Tucker-type AND THE SHOW WAS ON FOX 😂 (“call Hillary” STILL current) and that kid who grew up to be in EVERYTHING is his son and… WTF?! DAVID SCHWIMMER? Ironically, the future Ross’ pals would mock him mercilessly for the 6 weeks this was on the air. “With FRIENDS like these….”, he would mutter. It’s good that the un-filmed scripts didn’t go to waste and could used for “Last Man Standing”. Googled. It’s David Krumholtz. Funny I couldn’t remember. With a name like that…

David Swimmer actually went on to star as the character 'Ross' in blockbuster ensemble comedy 'Friends'. And I hope you all have good 'Friends' too and do not despair that there are no more episodes of 'Monty'. Raise a glass with me to classic comedies and TV in general.

I remember watching this when it aired because the woman who played David Schwimmer’s girlfriend was a friend of my brother. So I was hoping it would be good. By the end of the episode I knew it wouldn’t last. And the reason it tanked was obvious. Henry Winkler was playing a rude arrogant jerk. What’s funny about that. I’m really surprised that at the very first table read, they didn’t already realize they were flogging a dead horse. Sadly that was my brothers friends one shot at sitcom stardom. Although she did go on to be an MTV Host for a few years.

David Schimmer said the show didn't work because Monty was a character you had to love to hate. The audience couldn't hate Henry Winkler they liked him too much. For Schimmer the experience was so awful that he vowed never to do television again. Fortunately for his bank balance he reneged and did Friends. While Winkler was probably miscasted. I doubt a John Lithgow could have saved this show. The material was pretty weak.

Why did this show bombed, I realized that.. people love Henry Winkler & they love the Fonz, and they love to love him, and the character he played in "Monty" was suppose to be a character you were suppose to hate. Maybe that's why the show probably didn't work, cause no matter what people want to Love him.

This show bombed because it was terrible. Originally it was going to be on NBC and produced by Gary David Goldberg of "Family Ties" with John Pasquin directing. The original premise had a gay daughter, but the powers-that-be at NBC thought it was too controversial for 1994. Once the show got passed to FOX, they wanted David Schwimmer over the gay daughter. Goldberg and Pasquin left the project and Winkler stayed. Henry Winkler later said he regretted not walking away from the show.

The third of three shows I enjoyed in 1994 that got cancelled, along with 704 Howser and Phenom. No one was buying Henry Winkler as a d-bag conservative though.

Yeah, didn't help that he was doing a soft lampooning of Rush Limbaugh. Rush turned against it, it lost the Republican audience, the liberal audience, he wasn't lampoon hard enough. For the non political crowd Fonzie, wearing a suit, and the complete opposite of the fonze you new and loved just didn't work. Honestly the only sitcom actor, to get away with a character change like this was Ted Danson from Cheers to Becker, but he had a failure Inc. In between those. Strong cast, not a bad idea for show, writing could if been stronger. Probably needed to be on CBS, as fox had nothing to pair it with and stuck it on Tue nights to get killed by competitors and gave up on it after 2 months.

This actually looked ok from this 7 min clip, I actually liked all of the characters shown except for that dad. Whoever wrote his lines deserved the show tanking. Just terrible. The rest were absolutely fine though.

Fox started in the toilet, so they'd put anything on the air and if it did well enough, it stayed. Then they got the NFC contract and everything went right to hell.
