"Monty Python & the Holy Grail" doesn't land with everyone humorwise,, but you seem to have a good understanding of it, and I think, that it got you somewhat accustomed to the comedy troop's obsurdist style enough, where I think, you will thoroughly enjoy, Monty Python's masterpiece, "Life of Brian" which takes place in the time and place of Christ. At the time of it's release, it actually renewed interest in Christianity, even though it was a comedy. It follows the life of a contemporary of Jesus. Please check it out.

@@albertmeier2425 One thing many Christians share is a sense of humor. There's nothing to fear from "Life of Brian", unless someone is insecure about their faith. I'd say, that insecure faith isn't faith, so those.with insecure faith who watch "Life of Brian" would have nothing to jeopardize anyway. Those with faith, have nothing to fear and will get some great laughs!

@@albertmeier2425 Have you watched "Life of Brian"? If so, did you feel as though it insulted something or someone dear to you? If you haven't seen it, I encourage you to watch it and see, if you still feel the same way about it. Not everyone has a sense of humor. About 20% of people don't, so you may end up just enduring it, rather than enjoying it, and may rationalize not laughing, because you see "Life of Brian" as blasphemous, but it wouldn't matter, what the film was about, you still wouldn't "get it". Of course, there's a good chance, that you do have a sense of humor, or else you wouldn't be watching a reaction to "Monty Python & the Holy Grail" in the first place. At any rate, in my opinion, Californiablend should be encouraged to watch "Life of Brian", rather than discouraged. She might enjoy it, and it could bring a lot more views to her channel. There are plenty of other movies, which she could react to that have a slight chance of making her feel uncomfortable that wouldn't get many views.

Saw this movie in a theater with friends, when it first was released. We laughed uproariously, especially at the verbal humor. We were regular watchers of the TV show, Monty Python's Flying Circus, so we knew that *nothing* should be taken seriously in this movie. I later became a university professor, and I had a lot of students who could quote passages from the film.

It's just a very silly movie, which was the point. The abrupt ending and lack of horses was due to running out of money. The Life of Brian is more coherent, funnier, and is their best, in my opinion.

"Holy Grail" was the Python troupe's first movie after a TV run of four series from 1969-74. Their impact, at least in Britain, was such that many people in the business declared that nothing and no one could follow them, and comedy was, in effect, over as a source of TV shows. This movie is completely nuts...everything by Monty Python is! Not everyone gets Python's humor. It can be quite philosophical one moment and then completely mental the next. I love Python and have since I was a kid...but I know people who think Python is just stupid. Eric Idle (Sir Robin) was the main "music" guy of Python, and in the early 2000s turned 'Holy Grail' into a musical called 'Spamalot ' that opened on Broadway in 2004 and it won a slew of top awards. It also included a song that was originally written for the ending of 'Monty Python's The Life of Brian'..."Always Look On The Bright Side of Life". If you ever watched 'Grey's Anatomy', Sara Ramirez (Dr. Callie Torres) won the Tony for her role as The Lady of the Lake in the Original Production. The guys of Python were not really actors when they made this. They were sketch writers and comedians, since then a few became quite good actors with the right material (Michael Palin, Eric Idle, and John Cleese), Terry Jones focused on writing and directing, and Terry Gilliam became a quite prominent director with an amazing body of work. Unfortunately, just as he was coming into his own as an actor, Graham Chapman passed away due to AIDS.

Python’s humor is absurdist and subversive satire, which I appreciate. But I’m of that generation that first saw Python in the early seventies. Our background and context is so different from people born in the late nineties onwards that it rarely elicits visceral laughter from that group, I’ve noticed. Even I don’t laugh at it as easily as I used to. I don’t think it’s “bad”, it’s just the context from the previous century (the very things it’s pointedly subverting) are missing from younger people, both for good and for ill. They’ve moved on. They do love the music from my generation, although some of that same context is missing, so the reasons _why_ they appreciate it might not fully match, but music ages better than almost anything. Feel free to disagree, it’s just my thoughts, and not fully put together.

The way this movie ended was because they had a lack of money, but you'll notice when the knight killed the historian, that that knight just so happened to be riding a horse. This causes an investigation throughout the rest of the movie, which is why they all get arrested in the end. However, it couldn't have been any of them that murdered the historian because none of them were riding horses, as you made note of.

This film is more like a series of stitched together Python sketches that follow a ‘King Arthur’ theme and whilst it’s a good entry into Monty Python style of comedy, Life of Brian is a more coherent story and arguably their masterpiece. Even if you weren’t overly sold on this film, I heartily recommend watching Life of Brian.

Perhaps it was because of "Just spell my name right publicity", or just that it rekindled interest in people brought up as Christians but had forsaken religion, because their lives were so busy but lately had become settled enough to have room for it again, so "Life of Brian" simply reminded them of Christianity at the right time in their lives.

The end of the movie was a “cop-out”. A classic bit used a lot from the Monty pythons group where the sketch ends with a cop storming in and arresting everyone for being to silly.

You are close on the Odyssey - Odissious does encounter the Sirens but remember he had his men tie him to the mast. He was waylayed by Clysto who kept him for almost 20 years and wanted to keep him with her an make him immortal.

Monty Python's Flying Circus (or just Monty Python for short) was a comedy sketch show on BBC eons ago. If you had watched that, you would be familiar with their style and this might have made more sense. You can find Monty Python episodes and skits on youtube. You can try some to see if it helps understand the context. Or don't. It's not the audience's responsibility to do homework to get a movie. In the show they often had no ending for a skit, so they would just hard cut to black or credits or another skit. Or have a character declare it wasn't funny any longer. Hence this movie's ending is very much their style. Also some skits would be one character reacting poorly to some word so the skit was about not saying it, or the effects of saying it. Zoot is Carol Cleveland who often worked with Monty Python while not actually a member. Terry Gilliam did the animations which are mostly just him moving around cut out pictures. Another movie is the Life of Brian. Some dislike it as a satire of Jesus. It's more a satire of Judean and Roman politics. This movie is a bit more coherent. And the Meaning of Life which has no through plot line but more a collections of skits like the telly show.

6:26 the 1999 DVD of this film's extras show the ledge they 'threw the animals off' was actually a mock up ,about 2 or 3 high. no animals got harmed in this film, don't worry. :D Also, Jones and Palin revisited many of the original locations where the movie was filmed at.

My very french self have seen this movie for the first time when I was 6 or 7 (I was born in the 90´s) and my parents had it in VHS, I fell in love with the humour and watched it numerous times while growing up, with new perspectives and a different comprehension each time, it's bloody brilliant and the script is 😙🤌 *chief kiss*.

The end is a "cop out" ... there were quite a few sketches in "Monty Python's Flying Circus" which were simply cut off by the actors breaking the fourth wall ... stating how silly the joke had become. One of the most memorable ones is "two mafioso try to blackmail the commander of an army base for protection money" ... "it would be a shame if something bad happened to those tanks of yours".

(Also, keep in mind that at the time (1975) in Britain, 16 was the age of consent, not 18, so the age range was not legally inappropriate.) "8 score" is "8 times 20," or 160 total. When Lancelot "rescues" Galahad, Galahad says, "There's only 160 of them!"

It might help to watch other people reactions to The Holy Grail. The next movie, “The Life of Brian” is more coherent, but it mocks Christianity in some ways. It was banned in some countries because of it. But Monty Python likes to be silly and turn things on their head.

I would guess a basic gravity trebuchet would have been used. It would be udderly insane to try to balance a cow🐄 or a Trojan rabbit 🐇on the arm of a mangonel and have it be that accurate. The Python's humor is absurdist/surreal, which is not to everyone's taste. Probably the best introduction to their particular brand of absurdist humor is their first film _And Now for Something Completely Different._ It is a re-filming of some of the funniest sketches from the first two seasons of their series _Monty Python's Flying Circus._ It was made specifically to introduce them to the US market and drum up American interest. It was well received, and the year after its release in the US PBS began showing _Flying Circus_ as a regular weekly program. Also, in _Holy Grail_ there are many literary and cinema references which will not land if you are unfamiliar with the source material. Just an example, the scene of monks banging themselves on the head while chanting is a parody of a procession of flagellant monks in Bergman's _The Seventh Seal._ As an introduction to absurdist theater I'd recommend Pirandello's _Six Characters in Search of an Author_ and Ionesco's _The Bald Soprano._

I can understand if this wasn't that funny for you, a lot of people have trouble with this one. You might try The Life of Brian if you want to give them a second chance or check out some of their TV skits.

Tbh 40 years ago it was funnier then now! Same goes for the benny hill show 😸 and mister bean series is a good example too.

Don't worry if you don't like it right away; I didn't laugh the first time I watched it either, because it was just soooo weird and different to anything I had seen before. As days passed though and I thought about it, it slowly started to click into place. Today I love all things Python. Give it another chance after awhile and see if it works for you. It's supposed to be nonsensical in order to make you not take anything too serious. I didn't like this movie until I stopped asking why. Though Life of Brian is still my favourite, it is silly too but it has some deeper meaning.

Hi. Good the you give your honest opinion:) MP has a very absurdist humor. Maybe not for everyone. If youre still interested in giving the british a shot, try "a fish called Wanda." Or maybe Life of brian (if you are not offened by Religious jokes). That one is also very absurd, but it has a narrative through it while holy grail is more like a collection of Sketches.

Interesting...I would have sworn you were enjoying yourself as you were watching the movie...but at the end you say you didn't find it funny and had a hard time sitting through it. Oh well! On to the next one, I guess!

I've seen this with several reactors b with this movie. I think the sudden end leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Answer: in the dark ages sometimes animals would be used as ammo during sieges, they were usually either extremely sick or rotting, this was done because either it took manpower to clean up or if left alone could become an extremely virulent disease vector. It was one of the oldest types of biological warfare, despite the actual science of diseases being almost completely unknown at the time. One of the earlier examples that, at the time of the movie's production, was known about was the battle of Thun L'Eveque, which ended in a truce because the defenders literally couldn't breath due to the smell, where was this battle? France. Granted now days we know that the practice was generalized closer to the 14th and 15th century, so it doesn't make as much sense when you look at the joke in-context as occurring in the 10th century. Also, Monty Python is English, it's always in style for them to mock the French. 20:30, the movie ends in a literal 'cop out'. This movie will always hold a special place in my heart, it was the first movie I saw with my father that I can actually remember.
