To give this movie a little context, which probably will make the experience even weirder: "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" is probably the single most historically accurate depiction of Medieval Britain and Europe ever put on film. Monty Python was a British comedy troupe who had a long-running sketch comedy tv show. They specialized in absurd comedy, and all the members wrote their scripts and played all the different characters in their sketches. It was the same with this movie except that the main script was written just by the two Terry's in the group - Terry Gilliam (Patsy, the Old Man From Scene 24, the animator in the movie and in the actual production) and Terry Jones (Sir Bedevere, Prince Herbert, Dennis's mom, etc.). Outside of the group, Terry Jones happened to be an accredited historian, and he made sure "Holy Grail" reflected the life and culture of Medieval Britain down to the smallest details. Except for the lack of horses (too expensive) and the cops, nearly everything in this movie actually existed in the Middle Ages, including but not limited to: - Killer Rabbits - Rabbits brutally slaughtering humans was a big thing in medieval pop culture. I believe it was considered hilarious. - Naughty Illustrations - Take a close look at the details of medieval European illuminated manuscripts some time. They got away with a lot in those days. - Monks hitting themselves in the head with boards - Flagellant monastic orders engaged in self-punishment to purge themselves of worldly attachments. - The Holy Hand Grenade - Okay, that one's a joke, but medieval people were all about religious relics, and it seemed like there was no need for which you couldn't find at least one. - The Holy Grail - Supposedly the cup from which Jesus drank at the Last Supper. The quest to find the Holy Grail is one of the key stories of the Legends of King Arthur, dating from the Middle Ages. That's what this movie is parodying. - The Black Knight having all his limbs removed - Couple things: First, in Medieval literature, seemingly immortal, invincible knights challenging random travelers to mortal combat for no apparent reason were even more common and popular than killer rabbits. Second, in history, the Black Knight's refusal to give up is only slightly beyond reality. People back then were tough. My personal favorite story is of French nobleman and politician of the 1400s, Enguerrand de Coucy, who during some battle of the 100 Years War, got hit by an arrow through the visor of his helmet, which passed through his nose and stuck there, and then got speared by a lance that passed through his shield and into his chest, pinning his arm in place so he couldn't use it (and had a broken lance stuck in his chest), and got trapped on a bridge, surrounded by enemies, who he was hacking down on all sides with his sword, one handed, when he was finally rescued by reinforcements. He survived all that and continued his quite illustrious career, dying many years later at over 90 years old. Every time I hear the line "'Tis but a scratch," I think of Enguerrand de Coucy. - Castle Anthrax, the Knights Who Say Ni, the 3-Headed Giant, Tim the Enchanter - All classic features of Medieval pop culture. You couldn't have a bestselling ballad, epic poem, or play without these characters. - Nobody knowing who the King is or even that they live in a nation, and nobody caring - That was totally historically accurate. What - did they have news media back then? How were common people supposed to know? - Dennis and the Autonomous Collective - Also historically accurate, although parodied for the movie. If the lord of a manor died or went crusading or otherwise vanished, and nobody took over the title to his lands, what were the peasants supposed to do? They just got stuff organized and carried on. Self-governing communities attached to abandoned castles were very common. - How Do You Know She's a Witch? - Yep, historically accurate. Records of trials and inquisitions sound pretty similar to the "logic" of the witch scene in "Holy Grail." But come on now, is that part really so strange? It sounds a lot like social media "logic," too, doesn't it? - The French - Chalk up another for historical accuracy. The French randomly taking over castles in England really happened from time to time. The British did it to the French, too. - Everybody being surprisingly smart and well-educated - Also historically accurate, though also parodied for comedy. As weird, violent, and horrible as the Middle Ages were, the people then were not stupid. - Totally random violence - True to both the culture and the history. I believe that, if we could travel back in time and show this movie to real Medieval people, they'd laugh just as hard as every nerd in the 1970s, when it was made.

Excellent breakdown, thank you - this deserves to be pinned. I also understand from some things I've read that the thing about the peasants and townsfolk always seeming to be wallowing in mud and filth, for no apparent reason, was a sort of academic joke. The joke being that there being terrible standards of hygiene and everyone being dirty except maybe the very wealthy (" 'Ow d'you know 'e's a King then?" "Because 'e's not covered in sh*t...") was a popular and persistent belief about medieval times which has been discredited by modern scholarship.
@jenfries6417
@jenfries6417 4 ай бұрын
@@papercup2517 Indeed, very true. In fact, it was believed that sickness was spread by bad air and bad smells - they were right by instinct - so medieval people valued cleanliness and nice smells on their bodies and in their houses and by many accounts were habitually cleaner than even rich people in the 1600s and 1700s, with the rise of urbanization. I think the idea of medieval people being dirty all the time stems from class-based stereotypes about farmers.

Well put, but I'm going to have to ask for a literary reference concerning "Tim, the Enchanter," because I doubt it's accurate, but if it's true, it's hilarious and I need to know more. In some versions of the legend, the Holy Grail was also said to have caught the blood of Jesus Christ while he was on the cross. It's the same relic featured in "The Last Crusade. "

In the witch scene, they were proving that she was a witch because she did weigh the same as a duck! When she said “it’s a fair cop” she was admitting that she really was a witch. It’s not that much more ridiculous than actual methods of testing if someone was a witch in medieval times - in one method the suspect was thrown into a lake or river, if she sank and drowned then she was innocent, if she floated then she was guilty and was executed. The “Famous Historian” looks like AJP Taylor, who actually was a famous historian in Britain in the 1970s.

just so you know, the ending where everyone gets arrested is a literal "cop out". If you dont know, a "cop out", or "copout" is a cheap storytelling device that suddenly comes out of nowhere, makes no sense narratively, and solves a problem that was otherwise a driving plot point. Like a common cop out example would be a hero suddenly discovering a super powerful weapon that lets him defeat a villian he otherwise was completley losing to

Monthy python and "Yes prime minister" are both absolute lengendary series. They take the hard raw and sad truth and sprinkly some honey and make it more easy to digest for people. Everyone knows what they actually talk about and that makes people be able to relate to the comedy more easy. very good big brain type of comedy.

To this day, they can announce they will be performing in the U.S. and the shows quickly sell out. Perhaps because most American comedy is so bad, in my opinion, Monty Python remains popular here decades later among those of us who have different tastes in comedy.

Th3e monks hitting themselves in the head with boards - as far as I know these didn't exist for real, but I assume they're meant as a joke on self-flagellating Christians (whipping themselves with switches, whips or in extreme cases nine tailed cats with little hooks at the end of the string) who back then definitely existed and probably today as well. And I believe there's a Muslim procession somewhere, were men cut their skin with blades to show their dedication. And I'm quite certain many other religions have similar traditions or rites. I assume the reasoning behind things like this is to prove how strongly one's faith in the god or gods of that religion are and to show that one is willing to do anything their god(s) might want from them without regard to their own wellbeing? Something in that direction. I'm happy to be corrected if someone knows better.
@jenfries6417
@jenfries6417 4 ай бұрын
There were many religious orders that engaged in "mortification of the flesh" to release themselves from worldly desires or fears and to vicariously experience the passion of the Christ. The monks hitting themselves with boards is a parody, but not that unrealistic. The practice was stopped (by violent force) when the Flagellants got way too political in their repentance parades around England during the Black Plague. But it still exists, in small ways.

That we spend an hour and a half watching a larp with no conclusion is indicative of most games, these days.

1. What about the moose? 2. Paying attention to the opening credits makes it better for everyone, including you. 3. The first time I saw this was in the back of a pickup at a drive-in (it's still here) with my siblings and a couple of friends. 4. Perfect Monty Python where you can just get sucked into something where you don't have to think about anything and just let yourself go. 5. "What ya gonna do? Bleed on me."🤣 "we'll call it a draw" 🤣 6. Quick bit: "Blow it out your ass"! 7. The ultimate cock block 😭 8. Robin's shield is a chicken. 9.The only horse in the film is ridden by the guy that killed the historian. 10.The ending sucked. It was a cop out. Literally They ran out of 🤑🤑

sorry Habibi brothers. when you watch Monty Python, the first thing you need to do is shut off the brain and just enjoy the silliness of their creativity!

Hey Habibi brothers! I know this is a little different, but would you react to the first crusade by the channel Epic History? It would be really interesting to see your muslim perspective.
