I saw this first run in the theater and at the very end the movie theater was in silence for several seconds until everyone figured out that it was the end of the movie and then you heard a little laugh over there and then another laugh and then until everybody was just practically rolling on the floor. It was the most outrageous movie and the funniest thing we had ever seen. Thank you for this reaction video.

I've seen this so many times. The scene between Artur and the peasant cracks me up every time. "Listen, strange women lying in ponds distributing.swords, is no basis for a system of government. Supreme Executive power can only be derived by a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony. If I went around proclaiming I was an Emperor just because some watery tart threw a sword at me, they'd put me away." And the Black Knight. Love this movie.

@@LordVolkov Definitely. Whenever I get to this scene I always think of the scene in ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ when the band has arrived at a hotel to find the whole entourage has only been booked with one room. In the chaos of the moment the fish-bowl glasses wearing concierge bleats a half-shocked, half-indignant “I’m just as God made me.” line when referred to as a ‘twisted old prune’ by the band’s manager when he’s arguing with the hotel manager. Jules, you are so awesome. You are the ONLY person in my life that ever realized that the cops were trampling "the shrubbery" in the scene where they set off the Holy Hand Grenade, or that there was another boat in the water when Arthur made it to the Castle Aaargh. That includes me and my brother, who watched this film many times and all the reactors that've reacted to it (50+). BTW, the ending (a joke) was a literal "cop-out". Month Python is the comedy troupe, and each member always plays multiple roles, which is sort of a game to see if you can recognize each time they play another character. They started off as a British sitcom in the early 70's and then made films. However, they never had a lot of money to spend, hence the cheap props, including the coconuts instead of horses ... well, except the one. Most people never realize that NONE of King Arthur's men could have been the one who killed the "Famous Historian" because he HAD a horse and none of them dd. For your next foray into MP, I hope you do Life of Brian. It's one of my most favorite comedies, as far as films go. This one was my 2nd favorite of theirs, BTW, and I DO love it ... and you 🥰🌹😳.

@@julesreacts BTW, their TV Series (BBC) was called Monty Python's Flying Circus, and it was "out there" but some of their funniest skits were born there, like The Dead Parrot Sketch, The Argument Clinic, The Lumberjack Song, The Fish-Slapping Dance, The Ministry Of Silly Walks, The Spanish Inquisition, Cheese Shop, Nudge Nudge, Hell’s Grannies, Fish License and Spam. Also, it is good to note that Graham Chapman played the lead role in all of their movies. After he died (young), the rest of the troupe went off and did some very impressive movies with other actors like, A Fish Called Wanda (Hilarious, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Jamie Lee Curtis).

So in the scene where the Black Knight gets his leg lopped off, he actually IS being played by a one legged man (he's played by John Cleese for the rest of the scenes before and after). Apparently Cleese just kid not stand on one leg. Sir-Not-Appearing-In-This-Film is actually played by the (at the time) infant son of one of the actors. 'It's only a model' the castle in that scene actually WAS a model. Iirc they couldn't get permission to film in it (honestly, the fact that this movie got made t all is impressive given how it sounds like filming was just plagued with so many production issues) Monty Python is the name of the comedy group. So, same actors (if you pay attention you can see them playing multiple roles in this movie alone) but different characters.

Wrong. The Monty Python team, John Cleese, Michael Palin and the rest, were strongly influenced by the Goon Show, a radio comedy show of the 1950s written by Spike Milligan, with Harry Secombe and Peter Sellers. It was surrealist comedy. And there are those who claim that the Goons were inspired by another group of anarchic comedians, this time a group of American vaudeville comics - the Marx Brothers (they really were brothers) who moved into Hollywood films in the 1930s. There's nothing new under the sun...

I love how the Castle Aargh is on a tiny island in the middle of a large lake, nearly totally inaccessible. Gives it a real mythical feel and it's great for defense but how was it even built? That's a lot of stone you'd have to haul to that tiny island. Anyway, I looked it up, and its real name is Castle Stalker located in Scotland. The little island it's on is tidal, which presumably explains how they got all the building materials out there.

I’m so glad you enjoyed this movie. This is genuinely one of the funniest comedies I’ve ever seen. The Monty Python members are hilarious. John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin constantly play different roles but you never feel like you’re watching the same actors with these characters. Graham Chapman and Terry Jones really are the glue of this movie as King Arthur and Sir Bedivere. They are both hilarious yet somehow keep the movie just grounded enough to make you follow them as the main characters. RIP to both of them. They were really incredible. I really hope you do Life of Brian at some point in the future. It’s just as good as this movie if not better.

A lot of the best jokes in this movie are because of the budget. Two examples are: 1) The coconut horses: They literally could not afford the horses they would have required, and came up with the gag of prancing along to the sound of coconuts 2) "There are some who call me . . . Tim": John Cleese, who played the pyromancer, was supposed to have a ridiculously long and complex name. When the time came to film, however, John completely forgot what the name was. You can see the look of panic in his face in that scene. He ad-libbed with 'Tim' on the spot and they couldn't afford to reshoot

In the beginning there was a TV series that ran for 4 series (1968 to 1974) and it was called "Monty Python's Flying Circus" It was a sketch show and some sketches just faded out into the next sketch and some just had a link of a man at a desk saying "And now for something compleyely different". Over the years people just referred to it as Monty Python. The basic group is John Cleese, Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin with animations by Terry Gilliam. Their first film was just a series of sketches from the show and was called "And Now For Something Completely Different" (1971). Then came "Monty Python And The Holy Grail" (1975), then "Monty Python's Life Of Brian" (1979) and then "The Meaning Of Life" (1983).

Yeah, this (and just about all of Monty Python's work) definitely falls into the category that I refer to as "taking the piss." It really goes all in on the absolute absurdity of it, and... there's nothing in the movie that you actually can take seriously on any level. It's just the way the movie is, all around. Still, I'd say this is their second most coherent movie, with Life of Brian coming first, and The Meaning of Life... just a complete write-off in that regard.

We can see some actors from the Monty Python's group playing different characters : Eric Idle as Robin the brave, the collector of deads ("bring out your deads") or as Roger the schrubber. The Monty Python were inspired by the italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini's films to to write the screenplay of this movie.

Funnily, coconuts do migrate - they're designed to float, and they do (albeit rarely) wash up on the shores of the British Isles.

Now the question is…is the year 932? Or 93 squared? Also, fun fact, the reason they used coconuts instead of horses is because they LITERALLY COULDN’T AFFORD HORSES…the only horse in the movie was a rental they got at a discount

Personally, I think Holy Grail is the funniest movie Monty Python made. Life of Brian also has a lot of funny joke and a plot that actually makes sense, but it loses some of the randomness and shock factor. In Holy Grail, you barely have time to stop because there's jokes coming at you so fast. Life of Brian actually has some social commentary and a thought behind the jokes so both have their pros and cons. I just like Holy Grail better. If you're looking for more of that random shock humor then their series Flying Circus is recommended. The first seasons are the best, after the third it's are not quite as good but still enjoyable. But I mean John Cleese went on to make one of the highest rated TV shows ever, Faulty Towers, after Monty Python and the others did some really stellar work too. Terry Jones had a wonderful series about real history which is probably my favorite.

The screen was empty at the end because the writers were sacked at the beginning, remember? It was originally said that they used the coconuts because of budgetary constraints but it later interviews is was also said that no one knew how to ride a horse any how. The budget was also the reason why they ended it the way they did because they lacked the money for a big fight scene. It’s a little ironic that a lot of what makes this movie so good was done because of a very limited budget so they tried to make the most of what they had.

Monty Python is a comedy troupe that started in the 1960's that had 6 Brits & one American who wrote & acted multiple parts (both sexes) in their BBC TV series *Monty Python's Flying Circus* & their films. The American is Monty Python animator (he does acts but does all the animation). Yes, tge animator who had a fatal heart attack was Terry Gilliam, the American. Their were a few woman who was part of the cast that also does muliple parts both a few films & TV series. But they were not officially part of the troupe.

Some people will tell you that they decided to have coconut-clopping servants when they realised the budget wouldn't be enough to get horses. However, it's a persistent urban myth - it's just typically silly/surreal Python comedy, which came up at the "ideas" stage, long before the script was written or the budget fixed. We can tell the idea was arrived at early, because coconuts, and associated swallow-related jokes, run throughout the script.

I've always taken that story with a grain of salt for the reasons you say, but it is true that the budget was very tight and they probably couldn't have afforded the horses if they'd wanted them.

The guys said it themself. I once saw an old interview with the group. They said they wanted Horses, but when they wrote the skript and simultainiously went out to see what the Horses/Insurance/Trainers aso would cost, they knew they couldnt afford it. So they came up with the coconut skit and wrote it into the skript. Didnt change that they still ran out of money and had to improvise the End completely.

Monty Python is the name of the troop. They had a sketch comedy TV show called Monty Python's Flying Circus with a few famous skits like The Lumberjack Song, Spam, The Dead Parrot, and, unexpectedly, The Spanish Inquisition! The Life of Brian is another popular movie funded by George Harrison (of The Beatles).

Credits at the beginning of the movie was common in the past, but fell completely out of favor in the 1970s. This was at the tail end of that practice. The credits of this movie are definitely worth watching, so I'm glad they did it that way.

Way back before the 1980's Credits were almost always at the start of movies, that way you had to watch them. When they put them at the end there is always a mad scramble to get out. Also back then the National Anthem was always played at the end of the show, as it was in Theatres

Dear Jules... did you ever hear the term "Cop Out"? This is the origin! The guys made this movie on an extremely low budget and just ran out of money. Hence why the Movie just ended without a real conclusion. They had to wrap it up and the best they came up with was the... Cop Out! 😉🤣😂 If you wanna see a Monty Python Movie with a way bigger budget and a true ending... please watch "The Life of Bryan". For me one of the greatest comedy movies ever made.
