Did the charm spell change from 3.5 to 5e? Charm used to be, the target becomes friendly towards you. So if charmed you would protect the caster but wouldn't turn on your party. At worst you might hinder your party as it attacks the caster. This is more like the dominate spell from 3.5.

Charmed is a condition that "charm person" and "dominant person" so maybe that or it is an ability but the charmed is a condition it is kinda weird to understand
