I knew Jerry Dwyer RIP fairly well. He gave me my first airplane ride when I was 13. Yrs later I became a Corporate pilot and he gave me Part 135 check rides. He also trained me for my Multi-Engine training. He was tormented the rest of his life because of this accident. I wish he had taken this flight, instead of Roger. Precious lives lost into weather that under the present FAA rules was IFR. 500 ft ceiling, night flying conditions is a deadly combination, for a VFR pilot. RIP Jerry you will always be in my heart.

I feel so sad and a little angry to be honest because Buddy only went on the Winter Tour due to Norman Petty refusing to pay him his contractual pay and all his royalties. Buddy wanted to tour in the Spring but due to his financial situation he was forced into it. Norman Petty should be ashamed of himself he has the blood on his hands of the tragic loss of these 4 stunning legends. They say Elvis was the King but in my opinion Buddy would have been if this tragedy had not happened. He wrote all his own songs and had more hits in his short career. He started Rock n Roll, Elvis just took the limelight. Elvis was great but didn't have the talent as a song writer and singer as Buddy had. As for the crash all 4 bodies were torn to bits not just Richie. It's a grim read but at least it was instant. God bless them all. These stars are now stars in heaven and will never be forgotten. Their music lives on and are very sadly missed. 💔💔💔💔💔😥😥😥😥 R.I.P. boys we love you 💖💖💖💖

Dion, from Dion and The Belmonts, was on the scene also. According to him, he was offered one of the seats, but because it cost $36, and that was the exact amount his parents argued about each month, because it was the rental amount on Dion's parents' apt in NYC, Dion turned down the chance to go on that flight. When he heard his dear friends died, particularly Buddy, ... Dion went into a depression and locked himself in his room at home. Anyhow, that's what I recall from an interview I heard on the radio, spoken by Dion.

They didn't suffer but for an instant.

It's called spatial disorientation. Requires the pilot to be able to fly on instruments alone which he was unable to do. The plane hit the ground right wing first. There is no mention of any distress calls back to the tower from the pilot indicating that something was wrong which clearly indicates TO ME that the pilot was experiencing spatial disorientation (vertigo) and had no idea that the aircraft was descending and he flew the aircraft into the ground. The very same thing happened to John Kennedy Jr with his wife and sister in law aboard. Another thought on this matter is that those older Bonanza's had the smaller engines in them in those days, not like today's Bonanza's. With 4 large people, full fuel tanks, and probably some baggage they could have easily been over weight and the aircraft wouldn't climb thus Mr. Dwyer saying he saw the aircraft's lights descending rather than climbing. Regardless, it was such a tragic loss of 4 lives that should not have happened.

Of course if you believe in heaven you would know it was God who took them, nobodies fault, God just decided their time was up. When god decides your time is up there is nothing you can do, in fact nobody can do anything. It was god who made all the decisions and forced the young pilot inexperienced in instrument flying to take off in bad conditions to kill himself and Buddy Holly and the other two. I was 11years old on hearing this horrific news l remember the next day in my classroom saying that Buddy did not die.Then I started work for Pye on my 15 birthday and was told by Diane who’s boyfriend Collin told her that Buddy was in a bad way in an American hospital.Then in 1964 in my home town Lowestoft by the sea the Crickets were coming on at the Royal Hotel up the sea front on 23rd Aug the day after my BD It was back mid July either 11thorthe18th Saturday afternoon a lovely sunny day I was going into town with my little friend when l was first shocked as what I saw had come round from the seafront by The Harbour Hotel on crunchers with leg irons on his left leg with a thicker sole on the left foot and what l can only describe as a cluster of a dark reddish bubberly flesh hanging from his left cheek he was with a little gray haired lady they waked by to cross the road then l could see his good side as l had never in all my life seen anyone that could have been Buddy he was the right height with the dark brown curly hair with the brown eyes and wearing the glasses with the brown Tops I never saw him before or since.his music was so great so l still wonder who it was if not him.

Heard that the Beech Bonanza was nicknamed the 'doctor killer' because it wasn't a 'typical' private airplane and owned by doctors who could afford it, and then crashed in them. It had variable pitch prop, retracts, and was a pretty 'hot' aircraft. A pilot with only 4 years total experience was flying a plane that was out of his league. Such a pity....

I also remember hearing about a gun that was found at the crash site. The gun was apparently registered to Buddy Holly. For yrs they thought Buddy had possibly shot the pilot. It was very confusing.

I once read that the gun Buddy was allegedly bringing was accidentally fired and killed the pilot which caused them to lose control of the plane.

I think there were so many contributing factors to this accident. I've read that the plane may have been overweight between the passengers. the luggage and the instruments. The weather with perhaps the wings or the motor freezing up. Poor visibility and who knows how much pilot error. We will never know. perhaps if The FAA was allowed access to the wreckage there might be answers. It was a horrible, horrible accident and tradgedy.
@DPBGMODELRAILROAD6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the FAA didn't exist in 1959. The investigation was done by the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) which was the Federal agency in charge of aviation matters at the time. They did an investigation and reached the conclusion that pilot error was the cause. Since I'm not sure if the aircraft had any flight data recording devices to tell what happened in the minutes leading up to the crash.
@galoon5 жыл бұрын
@@DPBGMODELRAILROAD The investigators noted that both blades of the prop were sheared off at the hub, which indicated that the engine was producing power at the time of impact. The directional gyro (heading indicator, or compass) was found in the caged, or locked position. That would have added to the pilot's confusion if it was locked throughout the flight. All the engine instruments (oil temp, oil pressure, etc.) were in the green, or normal range. The FAA, which at that time was called the Federal Aviation Agency, was involved in the investigation, too. Pilot error was their consensus.

As Don McLean wrote it truly was the day the music died. Death in a light aircraft is an ugly business it would have been enough to say they died out of respect to their families and friends, an unclothed Big Bopper just his shorts left on and the youngest Richie having half his head missing even I find upsetting all these years later. Eddie Cochran wrote the "The Three Stars" song about this tragedy as a tribute song it has never been bettered, the emotion in Eddies voice was genuine. Eddie lost his life as well and musically the world was a poorer place for their passing. RIP you have been my heroes the whole of my life.

Why was the airport manager watching the airplane so closely? Why did the manager climb to the top of the tower to watch the airplane take off?? Ill tell you why, its because the y KNEW there was a blizzard coming in, BUT, the airport desperately needed the money, so they went ahead and rented out the airplane to Buddy Holly, so they can make a couple of hundred dollars, which was a lot of money in those days. They are to blame for this crash.

why was that pilot flying the plane, when he was not experienced enough and he was deaf in 1 ear, and he had trouble flying at night. that does not make sence to me.
@terribleTed-ln6cm6 жыл бұрын
The ex sheriff says he just doesn't understand how three bodies got ejected from the plane , but the pilot didn't. It's very simple sheriff , the pilot still had his seat belt on. In those days passengers often took off their seat belts as soon as the plane was airborne , if they put them on at all. I just hope this sheriff was not part of the investigation , good grief !
@galoon5 жыл бұрын
The CAB crash investigators noted that the seatbelts had all been ripped out at their attachment points, so it really didn't make any difference--especially at 165-170mph.

It gets dang windy out there pn the prairie. I think it iced up and a big gust of wind caught it and it spun it in a down draft and the pilot then lost control. Dwyer should not have allowed that plane to fly. WAYLON came back to the SURF in April 1995 to play a concert. 1st time he'd been back there since the crash.

I think there was a mechanical problem with the plane like a clogged fuel line. Peterson banks the plane to go west but drops altitude he isn’t aware of or ignores which might explain the aircrafts speed. The speed and the way the plane hit suggests he thought he had sufficient altitude, before he knew it he realized to late he was way too low. None of them felt a thing, when the plane belly flopped on the ground they all hit the ceiling and were most likely unconscious for the roll.

I don't buy that. It was very windy on the prairie that night and there was sleet. He took off toward the SW and when he went to turn to the right and head NW the plane was so light the wind caught it and pilot lost control. They crashed barely 3 miles from the airport. The pilot had flow enough hrs. to know if he was up or down in that short time they were in the air. Barely 10 minutes if even that. . .
