Yeah, lots of memorial masons here in England tried the filler/poxy path in the late 90s early 2000s, we are still having to pull headstones off (if they've not already fallen over) and seperate and drill out the old dowels/pins and refix them again using cement and stainless dowels/pins (best long lasting method), i would'nt fix on wet concrete (we have rules on how to fix headstones) but if you do, you could at least let the concrete cure (before going back fix the headstone) then you could drill a hole into the concrete a few inches deep and use a longer dowel/pin and at least the stone won't topple over when the seal under the base fails in the years to come, which it most likely will :)
@bashkillszombies7 жыл бұрын
I'd use a stone pin, personally. Stainless will eventually rust, and you never know what you're getting when you buy stainless from anywhere but a metal supplies store. If you must go stainless, tell them you're a clocksmith looking for lathe stock. They'll assume you will know what the fuck you're talking about and not sell you the 440 recycled late night TV katana's in ingot form.
@420taft9 жыл бұрын
We only do the framed concrete on special requests. We usually dig a hole matching the size of the base, get it level. Dig some post holes in the hole. Pour a bag of quickcrete in , filling the said post holes. Then get it level and set the base. And you're not supposed to set a granite base in wet concrete. Use quick-crete gravel mix and it will harden over time.

Finding some of the stones in family plot seem to have disappeared and it doesn't make sense to me. So, if no person was to touch a stone like that, how long do you think it should last? Approximate of course. TY

I install monuments for a living. Do not follow these directions..have a professional do it. Yes its more expensive but at least it'll be installed correctly... For starters let the foundation cure before putting the base on.. No shims in between the base and die? Better hope you never have to remove it. Pre mixed concrete? Id like to see what this monument looks like a week later after the base started to settle and sink into the concrete.. Not to mention concrete pulls moisture.. Dont be suprised when your stone begins to flake and crack.

After 9 months, my dads headstone is finished. But with almost no rain this year, it makes me wonder if we’ll have issues with it sinking. Is there anything we can do to firm up the ground? I’ve taken extra dirt out to the grave to fill in places where it’s sunken in. It wasn’t bad but just wanted to mound it up slightly in case more places sink.

I have a question. My dad passed away almost a year ago. So I was trying to figure out how to attach a toy (figure from a Nintendo game) to the base ledge. (What the headstone sits on OR on the very top if I cannot attach it to the other). The figure is either plastic or resin (it’s from 1995 so I’m unsure which it is- worst case it will go into a shadowbox)

I know several people who have saved thousands of dollars by having loved ones buried in used cars. Simply place your love one in the passenger seat - drive the car into a pre dug slit trench - shut the car off - lock the doors and close over with dirt. Tuning the radio to a favorite station is a nice going away touch. A good battery supplies music for about two weeks. A gospel station is always Thoughtful.

1. Is anyone else deeply, deeply disturbed by the fact that they set that stone in wet concrete? The only good news is that the joined-as-one base is small enough to move around when it starts sinking out of balance. 2. Putty job is messy. Use shims to keep headstone up a little, then use a harder putty in a string (like play doh) to put around just under it along the edge. Then use a pry par to lower down one end at a time and the putty will squeeze out and clean up real easy and you'll barely see a thing. That's how the businesses do it because they need the shims there so they use lift straps on the ends with a crane to lower down your typical heavy base and headstone.
@ericcerra32688 жыл бұрын
you are quite right.. I do this for a living we dig a hole and put dry concrete in it. moisture from the dirt will set it. we use a little 1x to set the die on the base. these guys messed things up
@barnescarr71564 жыл бұрын
First thing you need to do is dig a concrete-filled footing with re-bars, 3 to 4 feet deep, then level it and install the base on top of that. Otherwise, the tombstone will start to lean, or worse yet, sink. There's a difference between an "economy" job and an "amateurish" effort.
@brandon180543 жыл бұрын
Why do you need rebar in a foundation that is 3-4 feet deep? The largest common monument sizes would range from 2000-3000 pounds. That doesn’t seem like a load sufficient enough to warrant reinforcing concrete with rebar.

I know this video is 11 years old but guys if you're getting into the headstone business then this is NOT the way to install a headstone. I have been installing headstones for 28 years and you do not set a headstone or the base to a headstone onto the concrete while it is still wet, you let the concrete set for at least 24 hours to cure properly and you never pull the form off for at least 24 hours for the same reason. You certainly do not use epoxy to seal two pieces of granite together because the epoxy will eventually crack and chip out, you use either granite setting puddy or all-purpose clear silicone to seal two pieces of granite together. If these guys were to try and install a headstone the way they describe in this video in the cemeteries where I'm from they would be told to come back and fix it the right way or never come back again. Installing a headstone the correct way is fairly simple and can be accomplished in just 2 or 3 hours and if you do it the right way it will stay upright and last for a very very long time.
