I wish I knew too! Someone who used to attend our local soldering night 3d printed them for us, I think? That was the kind of pairing I was looking for. As a first hardware synth, I find the lack of sequencer on the WerkStatt a bit crippling. I still hesitate between the Volca Modular or the Werk + SQ-01 combo. Thanks for the video !

Maybe it's just me but I never enjoyed the volca modular. It's the only volca I sold.

@@zoned7609 3 years later: after buying a few hardware synths and sequencers, I tend to agree ; the Volca Modular is the one I used the least (which sits in his box since ~1 year)

Hey there! It's Nick from the video, for a great 32-note keyboard to control the Werkstatt, I recommend the Keystep (patchwerks.com/products/arturia-keystep-32-key-slim-keyboard), which is a nice, portable, USB-powered MIDI controller that can control synths like this that need CV/Gate versus MIDI. There is a tuning procedure that you can follow here, since the Exp FM input doesn't come tuned to 1v/Oct out of the box: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIexemagnseNarc

can it CV to and from the volca modular ?

Yes, although you'll want a 3.5mm y-splitter (ie stereo to dual mono) to get the most out of the CV input on the volca (which is a stereo input). I cant remember off hand which channel is which, but I think the left side input on the volca takes 1v/Oct and rescales it for the volca modulars' internal pitch range. The other channel clamps the voltage between 0 and 5v from what I remember? The sync output from the volca should work as a clock source, so you should be able to trigger the envelopes on the moog from it, however the gate length will always be zero, so you will need to remove all attack. There's only one way to get CV output from the volca, and that's through the headphone jack, which means you can't get sound at the same time. I have 2 volca modulars, which means I can mix and direct all of the sound through volca 1, and send CV through volca 2. (don't bother, it's not worth it imho, just assume the volca can't send CV!) I don't have a werkstatt, I only have eurorack. The levels out of the volca modular are a bit weedy for euro land, so I've always had to use a strymon AA1 to bump the levels in my experiments. Looking at the levels on the werkstatt however, they seem much more inline with the volcas levels (line level basically), so it's probably a bit easier to pair those two together than say the Mother32+volca. It may be possible to take the modular connections directly out of volca and plug them into the (non CV expander) connections of the moog. I have no idea if this would work in practice (probably - but if you do this - put an attenuator in the signal path - just to be sure it doesn't fry the volca!) I can't find any info on the voltage levels from the modular connections on the volca itself. It wouldn't surprise me if they are pretty low (ie

Nice video. Here's what I'm thinking... Werkstatt looks great. $200 is a lot of money. Is the DFAM 3.25x better? HELL YES. I would say it's at least 5-8x better. If you are really strapped for cash and in a rush, the Werkstatt is very capable device. If you can wait and save some bread, get a DFAM or Mother when you can afford it.
