🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:12 pH measures acidity, stands for potential hydrogen, indicates hydrogen concentration and activity. 00:39 pH scale: 7 alkaline, 7 neutral; each interval is 10x difference in acidity. 01:08 Acids release hydrogen ions, increase positive ions; bases release hydroxide ions, increase negative ions. 01:36 Acid characteristics: sour taste, turn litmus red, pH 7. 02:03 Acid chemical formula: HCL (hydrochloric acid), HF (hydrofluoric acid). Base chemical formula: NaOH (sodium hydroxide), KOH (potassium hydroxide).

Great video! Though I still dont understand. The acids you mentioned had hydrogen and when you explained bases you said they had hydrogen ions so why werent the acids you mentioned actually bases?

Acids and bases both contain Hydrogen. One has more positive charge to give away, a Hydrogen ion by itself being positively charged, as they are in acids. Because we know reactions exist in equilibrium that is, being evenly matched positive and negative charges, an acid gives Hydrogen during a reaction with other compounds that are negatively charged. OH, hydroxide is a base. Because it has a negative charge as the oxygen atom binds with the hydrogen and still has unfilled (that is unbalanced) negative charge remaining. It will pair readily with any atoms or substance with a net positive charge, think Potassium and Na, Sodium. (Fewer open electrons to pair with in its outer valance shell). OH, hydroxide ions found in bases are not the same as acids, although both contain Hydrogen, they are mirrors of one another that have different reactions when combined with other substances because one is slightly positively charged and the other negative. If you don't understand the video or my explanation, review the aufbau principle and basics of the periodic table, including bonds, valance electrons, and ionic potential. Your knowledge of chemistry rudiments needs improvement.
