There's also a fan-theory that part of why the clones keep withering and dying is because the entire Moon base hasn't been built to shield against space radiation - another cost-saving decision by the company. So the clones are slowly getting radiation poisoning, which exacerbates their declining health. Lovely reactions to a brilliant film! :)

Thx for already writing what I was exactly going to say. All the clues are radiation poisoning, then just replace with a new fresh clone.

So why aren’t all the clones asleep in storage dying of radiation poison too?
@aaaagamedev3524
@aaaagamedev3524 Ай бұрын
@@alexfilma16 Because they are underground. This is real science - the only way to shield from radiation is with mass - concrete, water, everything that can absorb the high energy particles. Current prototypes of moon habitat utilize the surface rock to create a sort of igloo of moon concrete on top of habitable domes. There are other ways to shield from space radiation, the ISS is in low orbit so its shielded by Earth magnetosphere, which is not present on the Moon. You can build underground of course on the moon, but anything on the surface will require either a cheap way - a thick layer of any absorbing material, or a costly high tech solutions like expensive polymers/alloys, or water system, and its a problem to get water on the moon. So all in all this is a pretty convincing theory.
@aaaagamedev3524
@aaaagamedev3524 Ай бұрын
I forgot to mention there is another expensive way to shield from cosmic rays - its with a special electrified lattice that acts as a magnetic bubble, i think they are used (or proposed) on long range probes (think Voyager), acts as sort of a force field that deflects a lot of harmful particles, but its for electronics only, i don't know if it would prevent harm if a human was onboard.
@DarthMohammedRules
@DarthMohammedRules Ай бұрын
@@alexfilma16 Because they are so far beneath the surface that they are shielded from the radiation. I mean, pragmatically, that would be the best way to get radiation shieding when on the Moon for extended periods of time in real life... underground, with a lot of metal/shielding materials above you. I mean, if NASA or Space X or whoever really wanted to build a base on the Moon, and underground base would probably be the most practical means for protecting the inhabitants from solar radiation. Hell, if we're even considering this "radiation sickness" theory, it would stand to reason that the clone chamber (already below the surface/underneath the main facility) has been even further reinforced for exactly this. I mean, if the company's gonna spend the extra money, *that* would be where to put it.

I love that Jones decided to subvert to sinister AI trope. Gerty genuinely cared about the Sams and didn't want them to be hurt, even though Gerty's actions and the information he withheld from Sam was indirectly hurtful, but as soon as the Sams know what's going on Gerty starts directly conspiring with them, because it would be what's most helpful to them at that point.

I'm pretty sure it's never explicitly revealed that the clones just break down on their own. I think it has to do with the fact that he's constantly moving around on the Moon and being exposed to the radiation inherent in space with no atmosphere to protect him. It's literally being on the Moon that eventually kills them and requires so many replacement clones.

Wow, you guys had so much of this figured out early. My theory on the "expiration date" is that it's simply the limits of the human body they're running up against. There is no ozone layer or any other atmosphere to help filter out UV and radiation from the sun and outer space, so a lifetime would be shortened A LOT if you spent every moment in that environment.
@Eidlones
@Eidlones Ай бұрын
The original Sam did his 3 year run, though. That's how there was 3 years of correspondence with his wife. We don't see him, but we hear him offscreen and he seems perfectly fine.

Good point. Plus, the artificiality of cloning must inescapably introduce bit errors in the duplicated genome. Cumulatively over the lifetime of the clone, the body's replacement cells become more and more imperfect, setting up rapid-onset tissue deterioration and organ failure. Also, studies of ISS occupants document the health problem due to long-duration microgravity. The moon has some gravity, but so low compared to Earth, the deterioration is merely slowed down a little.

Remember though, this isn't the actual original base, and all those Sams shown being disposed weren't from the same facility. Gerty has access to way more than Sam, as he can contact HQ & get around the security. IIRC they show multiple identical facilities at the end across the dark side of the Moon, likely all staffed by Sams. The original Sam likely signed up for the initial project 15 years prior,for a pilot program contract, & didnt know he was scanned & cloned after. Also, judging by how the clones act as they come out of cryo, they likely aren't doing a full 3 years. New Sam already knew Gerty, was already familiar with the base. They likely had other guys like the OG Sam for the pilot program & other facilities initially, but Sam was likely the only candidate that A: Completed his 3 year contract, & B: Had a suitably convenient accident early in(but post all the expensive training & ride up) that worked as way to bring in new clones with minimal disruption. Also my theory about the 'ghosts' Old Sam was seeing at the beginning? Gerty is the one uploading the memory implants during the thaw out, & like the log computer messing up and showing an old log to the wrong Sam, some of Gertys 'memories' & repeated overwrites of previous Sams leaked into the implants. Also why New Sam has a nightmare about Old Sam trapped in the rover. Its quite obvious Gerty is operating outside his expected directive behavior, and likely did have a AI paradox before the start of the film where he ran into a problem that his directives demanded conflicting responses & had to start priorizing which directives took precedent, & settled on 'Help Sam' as 1st priority. Its been a slow moving cascade failure since then, with him following his other directives only as far as it doesn't hurt Sam.

I think what happened with Gerty is that the company never planned on this situation happening, so they never programmed it into Gerty. Because Gerty's prime directive is to maintain Sam's well-being and support him in any way (as long as it keeps him "in line"), Gerty didn't know what to do in terms of handling two Sams, so it just fell back on its programming of supporting Sam. It logically concluded that Sam knew about the clones so there was no point in keeping up the charade.

I love that when posed with the hypothetical of having your own clone, George immediately went to “I’d know how to push their buttons and annoy them” and Simone went straight to “but they’d understand how I feel on everything and it would be great!” 😂 Two very different mentalities right there 🤣 I’ve never seen this movie but watched your reaction anyway. Great job as always. I may have missed something, but I did consider it’s possible the original guy did make it home to his family. When the daughter calls to her Dad, we never see him. Maybe he did make it back and the clones are now the ones stuck out there, believing they’re the original and will eventually make it back? Regardless of if I’m talking BS, I love the films that get you both to think and hypothesise on how it all works. 12 Angry Men was such a good one for that, in a different way. That's so cool that it was written for Sam to play in, through a collab idea session with the writer. It worked, though. This movie is a masterpiece. Sam Rockwell is epic. Y'all stay awesome!

My favorite Moon Landing Conspiracy Theory: Stanley Kubrick did indeed film the Moon Landing as a hoax. However, because Kubrick is a dedicated artiste, he insisted on filming on location.

2:20 No, he's a whaler on the Moon. He carries a harpoon. For there ain't no whales, so he tells tall tales and sings a merry tune.

If we had clone George and Simone they could do twice as many react videos and we could gauge how their personalities diverge. For a more humourous take on clones you might try Multiplicity with Michael Keaton.

There's a great scene in "The Island" where two Ewan McGregors are talking while one cuts a wristband off of the other. This movie has an even more impressive scene where one of the Rockwells is touching the clothes of the other. VFX have come along way since "Dead Ringers" and the two Jeremy Irons (all they could really do is walk side-by-side down a hallway).

I briefly met the director - Duncan Jones, David Bowie's son. Really nice man. He's just finished shooting a Rogue Trooper movie (2000AD character, like Judge Dredd) in Rebellion's studio the UK - that'll be out this year.
