I think the comic book industry needs another 90s artist boom. Not that there aren't great new artists doing it today, but I think the American comic industry has lost its edge. Everything is so clean and proportionately correct that it's sort of loses the magic. I pick up a book and I see a really nice looking Batman or Spiderman, but it doesn't make me stare at it. I see it, say "that's nice" and move on. This SPlatt work makes me spin the pages around, get out the magnifying glass, really analyze every single line, and I miss that in current day works.

I propose the term "Hyperbolic/Anabolic" for this school of comics art. This is what happens when you don't get enough iodine, kids.

Steven Platt went to OCAD here in Toronto. Jay Stephens (who was also an OCAD guy), once told a story about going to the Silver Snail with Platt, and Platt looked at some McFarlane art and said "I can do that." Stephens laughed at the gall but a week or two later Platt came back with his signature style and was working at Marvel a little after that. We have good comics chops here in Canada.

I have the complete Platt run on MK. The first few issues showed promise but they were not what we see here in issue 60. He got hired on flash and potential, which he ultimately did reach. I have a feeling if he showed his work from issue 55 today he would not get hired at Marvel. Issue 57 is where things start to click.

I was recently randomly looking for the splatt Mk issues and wondering why their price was so high. Didn’t know they had been hit by the KAYFABE EFFECT! 😅

Several comments popped me but when Ed pointed at that panel and said look, the boring X-Men, that got me good for some reason.

Has Platt's run being collected in trade paperback/graphic novel? A "what if" had he stayed at Marvel and not joined Liefeld, what would be the ramifications?

Not yet, but Marvel recently solicited the first half of the Marc Spector: Moon Knight run to be collected in an omnibus, so the Platt issues will be collected in a volume 2. The Epic Collections will also get there at some point.

I also remember Wizard pumping these issues hard, and I bought an issue with a Platt cover, and was disappointed to find that he had drawn ONLY the cover for that issue!

At the time, one of Platt's stated influences was Liberatore's Ranxerox which was featured in Heavy Metal magazine of that period of the nineties. You can see it int he physicality of the Moon Knight figure work.

Actually enjoyed Platt's art on Moon Knight. No nerds at the comic store, in 1990s.

If you google Platt's Moon Knight stuff, he swiped a lot from McFarlane. Stephen Platt also taught with either Gnomon, or Massive Black. He left comics after a short stint, and he's gone into storyboarding since then.

You can really see how absurdly detailed his artwork is in Fighting American when it’s side-by-side with Liefeld’s art.

Platt was absolutely auditioning for Image. With only one or two issues of Moon Knight published, but knowing the title was already cancelled, he was an attendee at a small Toronto Comic Con in the basement of a hotel, and showed his pages to guest Steve Bissette. Bissette was "hot" with the release of 1963 at the time and the hope was that he would be a conduit to Image Comics (which was not the case). Bissette did comment "Moon Knight is built like a brick-Sh!thouse" when looked through the original art.

Like the artwork or not it definitely got eyes on this character/artist. Especially at this time it was all about the quirky "flashy" art...
