A lonely bamboo cutter and his wife had created a fine if humble life for themselves but had never had any children to care for in their old age. Luckily, this is mythology, so when out in the bamboo forest, the cutter found a tiny girl, only three inches tall! That would be unusual enough but... what if she was also from the moon?

Related: Miyuki and Ishigami are also characters from the original story. Miyuki in the original tale was the one tasked with bringing her the Dragon’s jewel, that is the symbolism of the Dragon with its jewel during the culture festival. In Love is War he succeeds in giving her the dragons jewel which swaps it around so that Miyuki is Kaguya’s romantic interest, while The Emperor Mikado has a different role. Ishigami’s Impossible task is to bring Kaguya a swallow’s Cowrie. In Love is war, Ishigami’s love interest in the 2nd and 3rd seasons is Tsubame Koyasu, her name literally being the words Swallow and Cowrie.

The famous romance anime Kaguya: Love is War and Tonikaku Kawaii is greatly inspired by this myth. They both have rich, cool, and mysterious female protagonists who are essentially Kaguya in these shows. They are also paired with intellectual geniuses and the best of men as their lovers. You can think of them as modern-day takes of this classic tale. Go try them out. I recommend it.

In Touhou version the reason she was exiled to earth was because she committed taboo by asking Eirin (psycho nurse) to make the elixir and drank it herself (and became a useless hikimori/neet princess besides becoming immortal) 😂 🤣 🤣.

Shoutout to the best adaptation to this story in JRPG form, Lunar Silver Star Story Complete. Features: A girl of mysterious origins (brought to a village by a stranger) gifted with magic. An impossible(?) quest, to receive the blessing of four ancient dragons that safeguard the world. The discovery that the girl is actually a goddess from the Moon (The Blue Star in the game's terms, but it's pretty on the nose) The call to return the girl to her place as a goddess, abandoning her memories and her humanity. And the plot twist that takes the original message of The Bamboo Cutter and gives it a whole new perspective for modern audiences. The game is as cookie cutter as they come as far as JRPGs go, a real short and sweet gem from the PSX era. But Game Arts paved the way for video games with voice acting and animated cutscenes in a time when Square and Enix were still too wimpy to take bold steps. Thankfully their work is still appreciated with both Lunar and Grandia receiving recognition and remasters.

I love the Kaguya-sama, Love is war (it's an anime) interpretation made by the main male protagonist Shirogane Miyuki. In the Season 2, Epsiode 3 (Chapter 56 of the manga) entitled "Shirogane Miyuki Wants to Gaze at the Moon", Miyuki described that perhaps the elixir was meant as a message by Kaguya to the Emperor to wait for her, as that she will surely come back to him and the mortal realm. Now, I know it may have used some creative interpretations from the author but I like to think that maybe the two characters, Kaguya-hime and the Emperor had romantic feelings for each other. The anime itself has had numerous references to the legend kn that numerous characters have names referenced to that of the individuals and tasks given by Kaguya-hime to the princes. Isao Takahata (Studio Ghibli) adaptation is even deeper in meaning, in my opinion. Not to mention the stunning beauty of the animation, based on Japanese watercolors, quite different from the manga style of his partner Miyazaki. I consider The Tale of Princess Kaguya among the best movies ever made, animation or not.
