The release of Apple’s vision pro marks an inflection point for virtual and augmented reality.
Because Apple’s vision pro has been described by all those who tried it as feeling like literal ‘magic’. The economy and business of VR is changing and needs to be talked about.

What I'm kinda scared of is that the insane pleasure and dopamine from the vision pro will make people lose interest in the real world. This is already kind of happening with social media: people are addicted and are constantly looking at their phone. I fear it will only get worse. In a way it's not much different from drug or alcohol addiction. It ruins your life, but you can't stop doing it. As cool as I think this new technology is, we have to be constantly aware of the possible dangers

Sure, having an avatar could be fun for self-expression, but we're looking at a generation that's literally trying to shift reality via their minds and would rather mutilate their bodies than get counseling. The amount of disenchantment with people who choose not to participate could be harmful; imagine looking at a bunch of beautiful people constantly in a realistic space but then turning off the device and seeing normal, uglier people. It wouldn't surprise me at all if there's a social disorder in which some people will only talk to avatars because real humans aren't worth their attention or respect.

I've seen this pattern before: Every time they bring out a new VR, they hype it up, make it expensive, present it as this magical thing, but they always end up being a niche thing, because most people don't want to wear a clunky (this is less clunky) headset or set of goggles for long periods of time. It becomes a novelty people get hyped about, then bored. However, you're right, this is very sinister, and fits perfectly with the World Economic Forum.

I get that you can be worried about potential risks but people here are too quick to proclaim everything as an evil conspiracy that will ruin society. You are right, VR headsets are mostly a gimmick and no one even wants to wear one for an extended period because it is not comfortable nor do people really wish to live inside VR, only experience it momentarily. Apple are great at marketing and will of course promote this product as groundbreaking and revolutionary, as they do with all their other shit, but I doubt it will have that deep of an impact. It will be a novelty item for a very select group of people who love VR. Most people will not even bother with it. Not everything is an evil conspiracy designed to destroy mankind.

What I don’t see anyone mention to much is this can be an even more privacy invading device than a smart phone. Take the inclusion of sensors or cameras that see everything you do and don’t, everywhere you go, all of gestures and movements you make and the time spent there. Next is the built in speakers that can hear and distinguish everything you say or is said to or around you. The fact that it does everything a phone does and more in terms of monitoring is insane. It’s not about the mental or emotional impact of the ar being introduced, it’s about the taking or privacy and liberties that should be the largest concern. Even if 1 out of 5 people own them in a group that means all those around it can be monitored. Just wait till they get smaller and more powerful within the next decade just like the evolution of the iPhone. And here I am sounding like some kind of conspiracy theorist.

I worry as well, 10-15 years ago i was vehemently against anything online, i hated it, Email, social media, smart phones, All of it. But eventually you have to give in! They make it impossible not to join. You need an email address for most things these days, Especially all these online portals you have to go through to access simple amenities. Like banking or contacting your energy provider. Ive had to cave in and get a smart phone. Ive never had any social media, none of them. The only things ive ever written online is YT comments and emails. Not that makes me immune i suppose but the future is very scary when you factor in this stuff. Before we actually have to say go to a museum and see the stuff and get a much better understanding. Now we can just download a museum and walk around without going there. I hangout in VRChat every day since over 3,5 years via Quest 1 & 2 PCVR. And let me tell you, the people get crazy addicted to VR. Longterm it changes theire whole character and how they see themselfs. They specially get addicted to the socializing experience. Imagine all your life you spend most of your time alone at home playing games or watching stuff, only having one or two friends and then suddenly you get the possibility to visit tons of other epic places, meet new people, make new friends, party at raves and nightclubs, get into relationships, socialize, laugh, visit events, F with others in all kinds of avatars, all from home without the need to go anywhere. It is a whole different experience than just seeing some avatars on your screen. In VR you are completely immersed into the virtual world, the people you talk to stand infront of you and you embodie your avatar. For introverted people, this is a very good place to better ones social skills at the beginning, but longterm most of them become addicted and exchange theire real life activites and friends, with spending time in VRChat. It has came to such an extent, that I have seen THOUSANDS of people SLEEPING in VR every night. There are worlds for that in VRChat, designed for sleeping next to your friends and strangers. This has become very normal. Also everyone mostly uses thick anime girl avatars and a big percentage of those users who use them since years, at some point become femboys or trans. I don't have a doubt anymore, that standing infront of a virtual mirror for years and seeing yourself as an anime girl, while still identifying as a guy, will change you longterm. Doesn't matter if you want it or not.

Tech companies have been trying to make a usable VR set since the movie Hackers and Johnny Mnemonics came out. The basic design mostly remains the same since the beginning except for the introduction of augmented reality. What should be happening is all these tech companies getting together and making a standard so no matter what headset you have, it'll work on Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Google, etc. It should be like cell phones regardless of brand or style, it'll work on the same network and make calls to any phone in the world. I personally won't use them since I'm older than the internet and I've seen how the young are obsessed with their phones. They can't put it down even at work in a dangerous environment. Silicon Valley tech companies have used TOS to install themselves as virtual monarchies answering to no one and enforcing rules as they please. Like Ghost in the Shell, they will be addicts, always plugged in and a feeding tube and IV attached to them in a bed or cocoon. Depressing future... God help them when the power goes out.

All of this sounds like a Black Mirror episode. and maybe that's exactly where we are headed, but I will point out that this headset won't be the start of everything, at least not in it's current form. It has a short battery life and the unit is heavy and uncomfortable to wear for extended time. Some people are willing to put up with it, but most are not. If something like this ever gets down to an eyeglasses level, then we'll probably have more of a mass transition starting to take effect.

Once this technology gets small enough, to the size of glasses for example, then we will see mass adoption. The nReal glasses are my first thought, and if Apple, meta, or Samsung can make Ar/vr glasses that have the same level of technology that these giant headsets, then we can probably expect the majority of people to adopt it into their everyday lives. The problem with these headsets is that they are heavy and uncomfortable with long use, so for now they'll exist as a neat product to have, but won't take over until they reduce the size significantly.

What came to mind for me is how easily and completely this will allow for the manipulation of brain chemistry through light frequency and patterns being administered directly to the user through the eyes. The screens and LED lights we currently use are bad enough, but this will provide for physiological manipulation on a whole new level, especially when audio stimuli are added to the equation.

We're going to forget that we're even wearing this device at some point in a single use, aren't we? This device is "perfect." You'll never not be alone with your thoughts, you'll always be mindlessly entertained, wasting your cash away to fill this emptiness you start to feel once the loneliness sets in. We're worried because we know we're going to lose authenticity in our lives. I want to share this epigraph from the book Brave New World. I think its something we should remember. "Utopias appear to be a good deal more realizable than was previously thought. And today we are faced with an alarming question of a different nature: How to avoid their complete realization? Utopias are realizable. Life moves towards utopias. And perhaps a new century is beginning, a century when intellectuals and the cultured class will dream of ways of avoiding utopias and of returning to a non-utopic society, less "perfect" and more "free." -Nicholas Berdieaff

The problem with VR is the same reason why Tim Cook didn't use the Vision Pro during its presentation: it renders the difference between life and artifice too palpable. With smartphones (or headphones for that matter), we still have the illusion of it being a technology that's embedded in the real world. VR isn't embedded, it overtly replaces the territory with the map, raising our resistance. They could give those away for free and people would still not use them very much after the novelty wears off.
