As for priming before starting, you should follow what your POH says. For an M20G, my POH says, “The engine will require some priming for smooth starting … priming is accomplished by pumping the throttle with the electric fuel pump turned on and the mixture control in the FULL RICH position.” (Original emphasis.) The engine is then started with the mixture control in the FULL RICH position. Mine seems to start pretty easily this way, even after long periods between flights and on cold days.

Hey, love this! Thanks for the video! It would be great to put in the notes for the video what model and engine this is. Particularly since Lycomings and Continentals are very different in their starting procedures. My Mooney knowledge isn't keep enough to tell from what I can see in this video. I would love a video featuring good footage of the Aspen. I really love the Aspen; I think it's far superior to the Garmin products, and there are so few good videos of them.

Shouldn't the mixture be full RICH while running the boost pump?

No I do not believe so... You would be really forcing a lot of fuel into the cylinders like that causing causing fuel to spill out under the ground therefore potential fire hazard... Would you pump up the pressure look to see that you have maximum pressure and then shut off the field pump... Open the mixture at that time and watch the pressure drop.. That's why the POH says to count to 5... I have done it the way you are suggesting and wound up with a big mess and a flooded engine.. I also want to add that there is a significant difference between a hot start and a cold start... I will be highlighting those differences in futute videos.. But also keep in mind every engine seems to be a little bit different... What is perfect for one engine may not work so well for another.. You will find the right combination for what works good for your engine as you perfect your start procedures...

@@kevincooper1025 ok I'll try it your way then. The POH says full rich. My engine usually starts on the first turn when cold but is a pain to start when hot.

@@Chr15T I think you're right. You have to be full rich, boost pump on 3-7 seconds, full lean, turn off boost pump, start and gradually increase the mixture as it wants to start and adjust rpm. If you turn the boost pump on with mixture lean and then crank, you haven't put any fuel in the cylinders, so no proming occured, you have just pressurized the fuel system, which doesn't help starting and that's why it didn't start probably. It should start right up. Maybe this model is different but, that's how I do it on my J.

@@Chr15T When the engine is hot and has been sitting for a few minutes, I just skip the boost pump part. So I go throttle slight, mixture lean, crank and when the engine wants to start, slowly push mixture to rich and adjust rpm with throttle. Starts like a car everytime!
