yey hes back I saw the porsche mooney that i think flew around the world at the aero friedrichshafen earlier this year THe porsche engine wasnt really a "auto conversion" but actually made by porsche itself and put in cessnas, a few robin dr400 and the mooneys, of which there still exist 2 today, the rest was converted back to normal engines as porsche stopped producing them and didnt want to make maintanace/spare parts for them for a long time so they bought all the engines back.

As someone who recently rode shotgun in a Mooney. I can attest-they indeed are “cozy”. If you aren’t on cuddling terms with your co-occupants when you get in, you will be by the time you land.
@sport21753 ай бұрын
Mooney cabin width has 1.5" more than a Piper Cherokee. Small planes are called small planes for a reason.
@JB_Hobbies3 ай бұрын
@@sport2175 Yea, I have heard something to that effect before. I think two things make the Mooney feel more cramped: 1) the center divider under the panel seems to take up more space than in other comparable planes; and 2) the front seating position has the front seat occupants extend their legs much more than in other comparable planes. Because more of an occupant's legs go beyond the center divider (due to the seating position), this multiplies the effect of the bulkier divider causing the people in the front seats to have less space to occupy. The seating position also makes it uncomfortable to pull your feet off the rudder pedals if you are not currently the one flying. If you are the one flying and have your feet on the pedals, those issues are way less noticeable. So, the discomfort is mostly for the front seat that isn't at the controls. Don't get me wrong; I like Mooneys, but I have come to accept that they do feel more cramped than other similarly sized planes.

I can’t help but think that Mooney lost its way when they started making six cylinder airplanes. The appeal of the old M20s to me is a plane with 900-1100lbs useful load that cruises at 150+ knots and has a fuel burn of ~10gph, instead of 13-14 you’d get in a six cylinder airplane and stretches the useful load further because you don’t need as much fuel. The second they started making six cylinder planes and rising in price, they became a lot less appealing than a Bonanza, which, while slower, is a much more comfortable airplane better suited for 4 people+bags. In my opinion the late-model IO-360 mooneys are the most desirable, particularly the M20F which still has the manual gear for lighter weight and can be brought closer to the M20J’s performance with STC’d modifications, particularly to the cowling.
@shawnedwards53693 ай бұрын
Glad to see that you didn't meet your demise working in that uninsulated hangar! I love Mooney's, but they suck to do panel work on. The top of the panel is so close to the windscreen that you can't really reach anything, so you have to do everything from underneath, doing a backbend.

Ah yes, the Bob Ross of aviation videos 😌 I fly a friend's Mooney, the world's only M20J with a Continental IO-360 conversion (Mod Works Trophy 221ES). Yes, it's a slight pain in the rear to keep up with maintenance since it's basically an M20K minus the turbocharger (as an A&P myself I do most of the simpler jobs) but I'm absolutely sold on owning a Mooney for myself one day.

Thank you for dropping another one! And one of my favourite aircraft! If I ever were to get really rich, I'd buy Mooney and reopen production. I'd bring out a completely revised version of the M20C. The market is missing a short-bodied, four-cylinder Mooney. The fact that their once slumping prices have skyrocketed to over 70k shows, that other manufacturers are not adequately covering that spot.

its really great for ownership from what a local owner says about having manually retractable gear. he hasnt gone super into detail about how much it saves him on annual, etc. but it seems nice to have and just fun to crank up the gear. though pushing it down early can be a pain from what i hear so you have to wait for speed to drop but that means more to do and more to lose track of.

My dad had the M20E in the late 1960s and crashed it in 1970. I was never aware of the wing leveler (which I just learned about from this video) Mooney always knew its aircraft had issues with pointing its nose up the faster the aircraft flew. Anybody with a brain would understand a bigger elevator surface would have helped solve this issue and maybe my dad would not have been part of the Mooney lawn dart that dug a 6ft hole in the earth. The fact is, I had no clue the aircraft had issues with leveling as well.
@pisymbol3 ай бұрын
Don’t know the circumstances of your father’s crash, but it probably had nothing to do with the PCS. A wing leveler has nothing to do with the nose (two different axis of control, roll vs. pitch).
3 ай бұрын
@@pisymbol I understand all the physics of flying and appreciate your input. I realize now I should not have stated, wing leveling was the issue. I don't know anything about civilian airplanes or the practicalities of owning them, but I love these videos. A question that's been in my head for a while is why not take a car engine, like a Chevy LS with an aluminum block, and put it in an airplane? Assuming you balance the weight, would that be feasible? I assume altitude performance would change.

@ryankennedy31093 ай бұрын
Is it weird that they use the most optimistic number? Seems like good marketing. If there's a prop/mixture setting that allows that IAS, I would strongly advise avoiding it, even if it technically does use 75 percent of the engine's power (which is a tricky thing to measure rich of peak)!
