I just started keeping mantises because I've always been scared to keep them and with the short life span. Scared meaning that I don't want to mess up and kill them on accident. Now I know they are a species that I will be keeping them for the foreseeable future. I ended up getting 2 female and 1 male ghost mantis and 2 Indian flower male mantis. I'm hooked! Thank you for the video and if you keep it, keep it crawling bro! Thank you for all you do. I'd love to send you a custom vivarium and see what you think. Hit me up.

How often should I feed my preying mantis nymph? So far I've been putting about 6 flightless fruit flys in its container and it eats them right away. Should I continuously make sure there is a few in its container at all times. Should I feed it once a day? Can you feed it too much? What is the right amount?

Superb! - My grandmother ordered 2 oothecas from a flower catalog when I was a kid and gave me one. My grandfather laughed us to scorn and said there were 100s on the edges of his field. He was correct. :D - Every few years I'll raise a few and they are common at our place. Also raise bees, and that can get to be a stand-off. I realize this was a while ago, but really appreciate this info. Learned so much! 👍😀

My daughter and I found a wild Carolina mantis this past summer. We let it go in my flower bed, and it literally walked back over to us...twice. So we took her inside, and found it was amazingly tame. She would allow us to hand feed her, and seemed to enjoy hanging out on our sleeves, shoulder, etc. She ended up laying 3 egg sacs, a week or so in-between, before passing about a month later. From the first egg sac, 6 babies hatched 4 days ago, and another 6 came out last night. From what I've read, there could be 50-100 in each sac, and all 3 appear fertile. I'm not equipped to care for 300 baby mantids. So my question is this, do you keep your babies in those 2oz deli cups, or should I go ahead and put them in the large cups? We have about 2 more weeks before it would be safe to let them outside. Unless you'd like to have the other 2 egg sacs, in which case I'd happily send them to you.

I'm raising Mediterranean Mantids from birth. A surprising number of them are dying. I think the problem may be their inability to digest food. One just ate a fly for more than an hour and its abdomen doesn't seem to show any food in it. It's like it's not fully swallowing the fly and can't finish eating it, as if it's like a human being trying to eat a hamburger with no liquid to wash it down. I'm in Las Vegas. They've survived 120 degrees and months without rain. I was told that they didn't need to drink any water because they got enough from their food, so I haven't been giving them any water. They don't seem to be molting as often as I had expected. Could lack of water explain their difficulty molting and swallowing?

I thought about getting a mantis for a while. Then a huge one (probably female) somehow magically appeared in my room last summer. It flew and landed on my air conditioner, I actually thought it was a bat at first! Took half an hour of using a large plastic container, a roll of Christmas wrapping paper, and a barking terrier mix to get that thing out the window. Didn't want one anymore. Now I'm interested in them again. It seems like they aren't to hard to take care of and wouldn't get out of the cup.

Question: We are keeping crickets to feed our pet mantids. I dunno what we are doing wrong but its hard to imagine anyone keeping mantids as pets when its costing an arm and leg to feed them. Hey man really nice videos you got they helped me out so far a lot but i got a few questions cause I found two Chinese mantis ootheca(I think) the other day. I live in New York so I assume its one of those two. I was just wondering what temperature I should keep my eggs at and how long will these suckers take to hatch?? Lol winter is coming up and I wouldn't want them to hatch in the middle of it...also when they hatch, should I separate them immediately or let them grow for a while? I need help I don't want them to die so hopefully you could help. Thanks!

if you place them in a paper bag and put them in your fridge they will overwinter and delay their development until spring if you like, 6 month shelf life. room temp will work. You cant stop them from hatching!

Was just hiking around and found an oothooka (however u spell the egg case...) ... I figure if there are a dozen or more that can hatch from this egg case then I can keep a few for breeding purposes (I suppose I will need to catch a few more for ideal genetic diversity health purposes...) and then release the rest into my garden. I suppose I may be giving them an advantage by protecting them through their first instars ??? At what instar should I release them to give them the most advantage? Anyway how did u say I can order flys from u to feed them?

I really know nothing of Preying Mantids but was wondering if they cross breed because the sizes are about the same? This is in the reguards of the Pink Mantis (Stagmomatis Californica), Green Preying Mantis (Mantis religiosa) or theChinese Preying Mantis (Tenodera sinensis). I have seen these 3 in my garden of irises at the same time and was just wondering. Would like to know if this is possible or if they would attack one another?

Recently saved 2 L1's from a bird bath outside my place, I noticed a few others running around by my neighbors wall AC unit. Against better judgement I took the two that were wet and got them set up, within a week they both molted(or tried to) One of them I found at the bottom the next day with his back end still in his molt, very carefully I cut his molt so he could at least separate his back legs(Did not get the molt off of his back legs, just removed what he already shed, so just his back two legs still had old skin on them) He did his best to climb and even ate a small fruit fly but sadly passed on 3 days after his bad molt.. The other one has been fine already preparing for molt #3 but I was curious if this was normal? Should I have tried to help him, or did I do more harm than good, What would be the best course of action if a mantis has a bad molt but is still alive? :c I didnt have the heart to give up and put him in the freezer, it just really upset me despite my efforts he didnt make it :(
