Love the concept, this is the way to go. I have one small modification to suggest; replace the diesel with a small (micro)gas turbine, virtually no vibrations, smaller - can be hidden virtually anywhere, less maintenance, lighter by a factor 4-5 and as a bonus will burn just about any fuel if need be. I think that is the next step from this already excellent system.

Only problem is the diesel is about 25-30% more fuel efficient so you'll have to carry a lot more gas vs diesel. Plus a diesel can generate far more power(torque) which could power a turbine generator in the future to charge even faster

Can the turbine burn diesel? Diesel is highly preferable to gasoline in marine applications (especially long-distance, world-traveling applications) because its much more widely available. Also, unlike gas, spilled diesel won't ignite, and it won't create fumes that cause explosions. Diesel as a fluid is much safer than gasoline (if you drop a lit match into diesel fuel, the match goes out).

Theres an alternative to conventional ICE poppet valve generators that delivers many of those advantages and thats a rotorwankle APU unit.. much smaller, lighter smoother very few parts. Only the rotor shaft, the tip and the bearings move all primary forces are balanced ..no vibes and much, much quieter. Historic rotor tip wear issues are pretty much resolved now curtisy of Mazda and tuning specialists and they love running at a constant and higher speeds... in a car the stop go demand reduces their efficiency and increases wear.

This is very exciting to see. It interests me greatly and would certainly look into deploying this system. At the moment, it can be retrofitted to any cat with shaft drives and enough space for the components. Once the sail drive version is shipping it will also work for Cat's with sail drives.

They face downward to enable joystick docking. In applications where this is not required they can face inward at an angle.

Quite an exciting thought-through system with nicely implemented ideas - just a quick general question though: Why did you opt for the drives to be facing directly downward as opposed to angling them inward between the hulls like the Alibi 54 for example? Wouldn't that make beaching this cat easier and be even safer for the drives in shallow waters? Thanks again for the the informative video - and as mentioned before me - the great visualization!

Love this idea but could it be made to work on a power cat without sails. Would say adding wind trubines with more solar and maybe a small hydro gen., with the gas turbine or diesel as a back up gen or range extenders only kicking into recharge batteries and then kicking back out.. Don't know if it would work but as a motor boater not a sailer this idea is one I would like to see.

This sounds like an answer to a lot of The hassle of selling a cat. Where can we get more specific information i.e. The charging capability of the regeneration system. At 10 kn could you let say he achieve 1000 W of power regeneration. More or less given let's say a fifth foot catamaran. Also the related cost? What kind of efficiency ? If you were to Power at 6 kn what would the gallons per hour be in relationship to directly powering a diesel engine.

I agree with Carrie Thomas; using a micro gas turbine would make this the best hybrid system around by a long shot. I would recomend working with these guys (www.bladonjets.com/applications/power-generation/), maybe you can work out a custom solution for your system or use your Gun Boat as a test bed for it and work on R&D with them. What is the power pack chemistry and energy density? Tesla Motors might be able to help there too, I'm sure they would love to work with you guys in order to expand their battery applications to marine drivetrains. Good luck and lots of success, hopefully you can keep developing this awesome technology further more.

No need to swivel the sail drive around to regen, just use a fixed prop and it will regen when under sail. much cheaper and more reliable than folding props and swivel system. This entire system is way more complicated and expensive than it needs to be, I guess thats why they haven't sold many

Mazda rx7 ...Once batteries are topped off, and solar is keeping the trickle/float charge, while under sail, hydro-regeneration is no longer needed and fixed props become drag. 1-3 knot speed loss over a 1,000+ nautical mile journey, is unacceptable to any sailor.

I know this is from 4 years ago, but to answer your comment, the sail drives swivel 180 degrees anyway so they add absolutely no complexity to the sail drive itself. Also, almost every sailboat nowadays (gas, electric or diesel) have folding props to decrease drag, so no, this adds no additional complexity, either.

I'm curious as to the weight of those batteries and how that effects performance.
