With a newly developed catalyst, researchers are working to set up systems to reduce methane in the air at dairy farms and other sites. "Methane emission removal is the fastest way that we can ensure immediate results for reduced global warming." Graduate student Audrey Parker says.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an independent, coeducational, privately endowed university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our mission is to advance knowledge; to educate students in science, engineering, technology, humanities and social sciences; and to tackle the most pressing problems facing the world today. We are a community of hands-on problem-solvers in love with fundamental science and eager to make the world a better place.
The MIT KZbin channel features videos about all types of MIT research, including the robot cheetah, LIGO, gravitational waves, mathematics, and bombardier beetles, as well as videos on origami, time capsules, and other aspects of life and culture on the MIT campus. Our goal is to open the doors of MIT and bring the Institute to the world through video.

Holy cow, it's mind-blowing! Can't help feeling relieved and kinda proud that I'm not contributing to this environmental mess by chomping down burgers. It's crazy how much damage livestock farming does with all that methane. But what really gets me is how the focus of the research seems to be on converting methane to carbon dioxide. Like, seriously? It's like trying to put out a fire with gasoline! I get it, finding solutions is important, but why not tackle the root cause? It's not just about the environment either; there are health issues and hunger tied to this too. I worry that all this talk about converting methane is just gonna give folks an excuse to keep on chomping down on steak instead of considering alternatives. Bottom line, we gotta ditch this outdated industry and shift towards a more compassionate lifestyle. Educating people about veganism and reducing methane emissions should be the real focus. It feels like they're missing the bigger picture.

As a Green Chemist, it's baffling how the emphasis seems to be on treating the symptoms rather than addressing the root cause. Converting methane to carbon dioxide might seem like a quick fix, but it's far from sustainable in the long run. We're just trading one greenhouse gas for another, and that's not a solution. Instead, we should be investing in truly sustainable practices, like plant-based agriculture and renewable energy sources. It's not just about reducing emissions; it's about rethinking our entire approach to food production and energy consumption. As scientists, we have a responsibility to advocate for solutions that are both effective and ethical. That means challenging the status quo and pushing for change, even when it's met with resistance. And hey, if that nudges a few more people towards embracing veganism along the way, well, that's just a happy bonus.

@@sneed472It's really hard to stop meat but is it possible to decrease your consumption? And perhaps switch from beef to chicken? It emit a lot less greenhouse gases

Who would have thought animals farting would make such an impact... Those methods will probably help in the areas the tundra is defrosting. Just wondering how much methane oil wells are spewing out ?

Making it economically viable is vital!! The profit margins on farming are slim as it is!! You should attempt to go further and try to develop the technology to make it an economically essential, income generating process!!!! Then it would be adopted everywhere!!

Carlo Rubbia, A Nobel Prize for physics, says that climate changes depends only for 3-5% from human activities.Climate has always changed during Earth epochs ... and give the example of when Hannibal passed with the elephants from the Alps to go towards Rome ... the elephants would never have passed with today's climate: then, it was much warmer than today, there was no snow and ice in the Alps
