When dealing with 3 high bars (the long ones in the video) it is a whole different story on the high narrow catwalks on a ship. It is very easy to lose control of these long, heavy, but also very flexible bars. In the past, when delashing, we would just unhook it, lower it vertically and then let it fall on the walkway of the catwalk. The catwalks are very narrow as I said. If you do let the bar go and don't aim it's fall perfectly, it could hit either side of the safety rails and bounce back up and hit you..... I AM SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE!!! I thought I had pushed it far enough away from me to let it fall, but the mushroom end near me bounced up and caught me just under the chin. It happened so fast that there was not time to dodge or react. It knocked my head back, my hard hat flew off and landed on the next level down and I was on my knees half blacked out from the perfect uppercut impact. Thought I had broken my jaw, my teeth, everything. But I was extremely lucky. Went to first aid and after a while I could continue my day but it was a big shock to see how quick everything can go to hell. My partner and I were working at either end of the bay at that moment and he didn't even know anything had happened. Hope you will learn from my mistake and work as a team. Still have neck spasm headaches from it even after 12 years but they are not as severe as before. NEVER HURRY...NEVER CUT CORNERS!!!

@Katrina-mx2sf22 күн бұрын
What? We had to use the bottom pocket of the 3 high....no training centers either, 2004. Sink or swim. And if you get overheight cans... in the dark, in the rain, skinny walkway, some older ships have really heavy gear, bad turnbuckles - it's truly an art.
@BobaT__8 жыл бұрын
that long rod was harder than I expected! I never had the luxury of those bottom stop part and it made it even harder for me. I can lift a 40 lbs barbell easily expecting the long rod to be very similar. Wasn't the case :/
@panther1052 жыл бұрын
A bit late to comment, but for anyone new who might be getting ready for the test - the 3 high bar is quite tricky to manage. Not many people have experience lifting something so heavy AND also so long. I wish that before the lashing test they let new workers handle the bars for as long as they want, test their weight and feel what it's like having something so heavy with most of the weight above you shoulders. For a lot of women, it's the first time ever hoisting such a heavy object. I don't fault anyone for being nervous or even losing control of the long bar. Even after years of experience, people still have days when they have trouble getting the bars in the pockets, slipping on bars and turnbuckles on the cat walks and not working in harmony with their partner. Good luck to all..!!
@Katrina-mx2sf22 күн бұрын
Ya, in 2004 there was no practicing / training before the test. And those bars looked thin. Get an old ship and those bastards weigh more than 40lbs. Add rusty turnbuckles, overheights, come in high go out standard, I thought my wrists, forearms would fall off. The turnbuckles can be as hard as hanging a bar. Not for the faint of heart.

They're heavy!! When you first meet them and try setting up the bars it's kind of a shock. Everything on the waterfront is big, heavy and seems out to get you. The bars themselves can weigh from 20 to 50 pounds and the turnbuckles from 30 - 50. And it's not just their overall weight, but the way you have to tilt and bend them to get them in and out of the container pockets. There are tricks and techniques to making the process easier. @panther1052 жыл бұрын
You always have at least one partner and you usually only unlock or lash up at most 3 "bays". There will be two more (possibly 3) workers on the other end of the containers so the same containers will be locked or released at the same time so the gantry crane can take them away. You do NOT do this all day....!! Imagine instead of the 4 containers in this video, there are 16 -18 containers (typical container ship width) and you have to do this lashing 3 times. (3 bays). Then there will be a long break and possibly you will be done for the day.... Hard work for short bursts and rewarded by long breaks.... Hope that helped..

One to foot the bar and the other to walk it up to vertical. Lashing a difficult ship with numerous clutter underneath creating foot hazards at 3am in the rain is always a challenge, and dangerous. Always work in a pair and look after your workmate. He'll look after you too. One person lashing alone is an accident waiting to happen. Just saying. This lashing video I'll give a 1/10. Do it on a real ship next time.
