Thanks for posting. I rebuilt the TRW pump in my 1965 Dart w/ 273 engine. I should have taken disassembly photos since I spent a long time googling for photos to see which way the rotor shoes should face. Amen on slowly pressing the rotor in while keeping the shoes aligned with it. If not, a spring will cock and the rotor will jam since the shoe then won't go down. Good you tested it before continuing. I had to re-spin a few times to re-align the springs. A few differences are that my reservoir has 2 bolts, with a matching gasket in the kit to seal the reservoir. My 1965 Newport w/383 engine also has a TRW pump, but its shaft is thicker (so pulleys can't swap). I think most kits come with needle bearings, lip seal, and bolt seals for all types. Note, that the later Federal pump looks almost identical, but is quite different. It has 1-bolt securing the reservoir and a short channel depression just for it, not the long slot on TRW pumps.

As good as this pump looked, unfortunately it failed when it was tested on a vehicle. The safety valve had been messed with (before I got my hands on it) and some of the internal valve parts shot out the side of the pump. It was starting to work before the failure so it would have been fine had the safety valve not been messed with.

Thank you for doing this video. I had a simple housing reservoir leak. new round seal done. No leak. When removing retaining springs or pins or similar, cover with a clear food plastic so you can see through while removing/replacing the son-of-a-gun spring/pin won't fly around. :-) I usually cover with my hand. Putting rag underneath is good idea/style. You did well. Give a hug to your dad.

The rebuild did go very well but unfortunately someone did tamper with the valve which did cause the pump to fail when I installed it.

This is great info as I'm about to rebuild the exact pump. How did you get the pulley off? Did you use a special puller?
@Charger383Mopar5 ай бұрын
Yes it's a special puller. Google chrysler power steering pulley puller and you will find it.

That one valve with the big stainless cap is the pressure bypass I believe. I'm trying to find setting info on it. My belief is it would be an overall measurement. The farther the cap is screwed on the more pressure before bypass. I cannot find info on proper settings.

What rebuild service did you initially use for the pump? I need to get the guts (bearings and seals) of one of these replaced

In the end. Did you find anything that could've made the shop say they couldn't rebuild the pump? Looking at the video it looks like its not worn much at all?

I think the issue was in the control valve. I had to use my wheel cylinder hone to smooth out the bore and fix a flat spot on one of the pieces of the control valve. I believe I got everything fixed so once I get the 2 seals I need and sandblast the reservoir and pulley it should be good to go. At this point I dont know if the rebuild service did the damage or someone long before my dad got the Charger.

I have to ask, How did get the pulley back on? It's a press on pulley right!
@Charger383Mopar4 жыл бұрын
I set the pump flat on the back with the canister off and used my press to reinstall the pulley.

The diagram on my pump rebuild shows 2 fins pointing one direction and two facing the opposite. Is that right or do they alwags face the same way?

How does one keep the power steering fluid from leaking past that one bolt that holds the bracket onto the back side of the reservoir?
@Charger383Mopar4 жыл бұрын
You could try a flat fiber washer.

@@Charger383MoparThanks, However I just found out there is an o-ring that goes inside where threads begin and that the bolt will squeeze that oring and seal things up when tightened down.

My 1965 TRW pump reservoir is secured with 2 bolts thru the back, though I noticed his has 1 bolt, which others have reported, though there are 2 tapped holes for rear bolts. My kit had a gasket with 2 bolt holes which fits between the rear of the pump and the reservoir as a seal. I heard that later 1-bolt reservoirs have a round rubber seal on the single bolt.

Advance Auto has a power steering pump for a 1976 Charger with a 440. It will bolt right up to your pump holder. It's 48 dollars with your old core.
@williamgrissom90223 жыл бұрын
Sure? A 1976 would probably have a Saginaw pump. The brackets are much different.

i decided to take mine apart because it has never worked since i bought it and i had to replace one of the snap rings because it blew up and jammed the control valve inside the cylinders. I've cleaned it out and put the parts back in and when i turn the engine on, the steering wheel moves to the right ferociously! i tried tightening the relief valve a lot more and the aggression has disappeared but the wheel still wants to turn right while parked and on. any ideas how to fix this?
@Frantissimo Жыл бұрын
the fix was adjusting the gearbox power valve

Hi my powersteering is not working when the car is idle, only when i rev. I dont suppose you know what could be wrong?
@williamgrissom90223 жыл бұрын
I doubt he knows what "the car" means. A 1969 Mopar big-block engine?

Same here man and if I can find the fix I'll get back to you
