I just bought one today for equivalency of 5 dollars at the lumber yard, but then I'm closer to the source. The down side with Mora knives, especially the basic ones, is that they're so cheap that one often ends up abusing them horribly. It could last years if used as a _knife_ instead of a door wedge, screwdriver, pry bar, wire cutter, concrete stirrer etc. It's a good knife!

A knife isn't a crowbar, chisel, hammer, screwdriver or ace, yet people abuse knives simply because they are led to believe it can handle it, there's no real reason to do half the things people do to knives Right tool for the job, seems to be the broken record phrase of the baby boomer generation, yet it's worth its weight in gold

When I first got into knives and started tinkering with knife making, I thought Mora knives were a joke. They weren't full tang, they weren't cool, they had shitty plastic sheaths and they looked like something your grandfather would buy because its "practical". Now Im a bit older and wiser, I have finally realised why Morakniv is one of the best knife making companies in the world, making spectacularly good knives: They constantly strive to give you the absolute best quality knife for the money you pay. Thats all they do. I own some very expensive high end knives that are considered masterpieces, and the best in their class. I have since found out that the manufacture of these knives was outsourced to Chinese manufacturers where heat treatment and quality control is a total fucking crap shoot. For example I spent a fortune on my Rat 7, and then found out it was from a batch made in China and there is a percentage chance it will shatter after a bit of medium use. Its great they will refund me, but if you can only take ONE knife to the woods, would you pay hundreds of dollars for a knife that MIGHT be amazing, but MIGHT shatter in your face and injure you after a few heavy swings? I think quality control is something people dont consider enough. Who cares how good your knife is, if there is a 5-10% chance it will snap when you really need it? I will never trust that RAT 7 and will always have to take a secondary with me in case it breaks. Thats a pretty shit situation for a knife I paid a lot of money for. So what will I do? Ill chuck a Mora in the bag just in case. Mora have insane high levels of quality control, and give the best tolerances for performance-versus-cost of any company I know. Refund policies dont mean shit when you are in the woods.... Mora makes knives wont ever catastrophically fail when you least expect it. And that right there is the biggest single reason to trust them. Great to see someone championing a budget knife. Great video.

My girlfriend got me a three pack of Mora knives for Christmas. The set contained a 511, 546, and a Robust. A couple days later, my son got his first deer (H&R single shot .44 mag). I managed to skin and process an entire white tail deer with just the 511. I only had to touch up the edge when everything was done. In my opinion, these knives are worth their weight in gold.

I just received my first Mora Garberg... This knife is EPIC !!! Build quality is superior. The one thing I really like about this knife that no other knife has is that it has a short drop at the point allowing this knife to be extra strong. Other knife makers tend to make a false blade on top in taper it an inch back. This knife does not. The taper is less than 5 mm, which gives the knife a whole lot of strength up front. For 70 bucks this is the best knife there is...

I also bought the Classic #1. Browsing through the Mora Knives I found a decent deal on a Mora 2000 and the Mora Hatchet for a decent price. But to get that decent price, it's only on the orange color. I also bought the Morakniv Forest Exclusive #277 what a beauty with the laminated blade (4") But because I qualified for the free shipping so I bouggt the green version for $5.00+ more. I also bought the Bacho Laplander to complete my ultra lite trio. The Laplander also comes in the orange. Great video about a great little knife. You simply cannot beat Mora when it comes to the performance vs price ratio. Only thing I don't agree with is that they feel cheap, that's not true. A cheap knife feels flimsy, has hot spots and provides very little to no protection to the user. Pretty much all Moras have a very comfortable handle that's gripy, safe, practical and solid. The Mora Robust is a great example. As soon as you grab it you know that knife can take some abuse and it's so comfortable it's ridiculous.

its solid plastic in a mora handle, so if your not happy with its shape, just reshape it with a file & rasp, just make sure your not altering any parts that holds the knife in the sheet, but apart from that.. file away.

I own many Mora's and like them all a lot. This new version looks pretty cool, but I probably won't be getting one very soon unless I happen to walk into a store and see one that I can handle. Just an FYI, the original 511 does have a small "hook" at the back of the handle although not as pronounced as this new model. You didn't mention the spine and if it can throw sparks from a ferro-rod or not. I've modded all of mine to do that by taking them to the grinder and putting a 90-degree edge on them. Thanks for the video & it was good to see Mrs.G-T even though it was for the briefest of moments! LoL
@mikafoxx27172 жыл бұрын
Everyone loves grinding the spine.. but why not just use the striker that comes with the thing? If it's an emergency you can use the blade too. The sharp spine is quite annoying for carving. Personally, I just carry a couple extra lighters.
@ComUnSas9 жыл бұрын
If the 'hooked' handle on the 511 is a problem for anyone, the Mora 510 has a similar blade and retail price but doesn't have the hooked handle. The 510 is a leaner, even handier knife. Sheath retention of the 510 is terrible though but can be improved by adding a shock cord loop in the belt loop.

gideontactical, I've heard about Moras for years and finally just received one. You are absolutely right about these little 511's. Outstanding little critter, despite the Kmart price. The one I have is carbon Craftline. Thing shipped sharp as hell. Fits hand good and holds it's edge. If you use a knife for cutting, which is a knife's intended purpose, then I think it would survive, with proper care, beyond my lifetime. I've deboned several deer in my life and can't see using anything beyond a 511 for that purpose or for whittling wood. Great review. Thanks.

My Mora 511 stainless steel knife was very sharp out of the box. If was sharper than my Mora Robust out of the box. But then again the 511 is a thinner blade so that probably makes a difference. I got 3 knives for $28 from Amazon. I'm not bushcrafting or going out into the woods, just everyday use and in my tool bag. If the sheath is too loose, just run a blow dryer on the hot setting over the upper part of the sheath for about a minute or two then compress it a little and run it under cold water. Now the knife will be very secure in the sheath. Love these Mora knives.

Got a companion SS blade and I absolutely love it as, well, a companion/secondary knife. I never had a Mora knife so when I got it and realized how light it was, I quickly determined that it was best for my system as a light, food prep knife. I know this thing can take a beating but I'll leave the heavy chopping and batoning to my BK7. That being said, I wish the companion was a thinner blade for slicing. I am, however, confused to why you say SS for food prep and CS for feathersticks. CS is on a lot of premium kitchen cutlery, can I ask why you prefer one over the other?

The little finger groove that comes to a point gets in the way and pokes my middle finger when I choke up a bit higher on the knife for detail work. I can use it without choking up as much and it feels fine, but to make it perfect for me I'd take the handle without the little groove. I do have hands on the smaller side so that could be why. I paid $10.04 for mine from Amazon. Got it in the mail today Update: I decided to purchase a kydex sheath for this knife because mine became too loose and as wobbling around in the sheath. I still have the original sheath and might try and fix it with a heat gun.

Would you recommend a Mora companion heavy duty for a first bushcraft knife? I also really like the Becker bk2 but it's much more expensive.

Start cheap. Get a Mora Heavy Duty Companion and a Fiskars x7. This will run you about $45. Then upgrade from there.

Ok thank you for your advice!

gideonstactical I enjoyed your review. I purchased this knife a few weeks ago, so I used your video to validate my decision..... we all need validation now and then, don't we. The Mora Heavy Duty Companion, a Fiskars x7, and a Laplander saw was my original kit. I've been using it for nearly two years and have found it to do all that I've ever needed. Each of these tools offers great value!

Can't beat these for the price! Why decide on between the Robust & the Basic? For the price(s), just get both!!

Like others have said. Grind off the hook. Stipple it with a soldering iron like a polymer hand gun mod.

I actually got myself one of these the other day after watching this review. In Sweden you can get two of them for that price, so there is no reason not to have one of these when you're out in the woods. It's also a very good backup to a larger knife.

Crazy value for the money. Here in Sweden you can buy those for 40sek, which is around $5...absolutely awesome value. It's razorsharp from the beginning and easy to maintain the edge. Just drop your money and have one instead of the last beer 😊

Ugly toy. Feels like a cheap kitchen knife. Does NOT impress my knife buddies. A dork knife. And I own 6 so far. Absolutely the BEST cutter of ALL on my knives! ESEE's, a TOPS, Ka-Bar, NOTHING cuts like those Moras! My fave so far is the 500 C pro. I own two of the Robust's, and the Companion, and some I can't remember....But ALL of them just CUT. Worth MUCH more than Mora charges for them.
