Hey this is great! This might be a dumb question but recently found some deer bones and want to make a knife handle out of the jaw bone. Does anyone know how I would go about extracting the marrow without cutting it in half?
@FKnivesCustomBladesAndHandles Жыл бұрын
I soaked it in hydrogen peroxide Which removed the marrow for me

F-Knives: Custom Blades and Handles - I was wondering where do your get your blades
@FKnivesCustomBladesAndHandles8 жыл бұрын
Secret of the trade ;) Sometimes people from Europe send me the blades. I have a friend, Ragnar, feel free to check out his website. He stocks a huge amount of blades from several regions and brands.

are you just filling tge bone with epoxy, or resin?
@FKnivesCustomBladesAndHandles8 жыл бұрын
Pretty much, It's a hallow cavity, I did put two wooden splints in there for support and bonding. When in doubt, Epoxy the hell out of it.

hey man im going to do this too on an mora, but dont you need to press down the handle so it doesnt create space between the handle pieces whilst curing?
@FKnivesCustomBladesAndHandles7 жыл бұрын
thatscarpy NL Depends, sometimes friction fits work but I most the time secure it all with some fishing line so it pulls it towards the blade.

I honestly mean this in a good way.....if u keep pushing material with your fingers between table saw blade and the fence, it's just a matter of time before you lose body parts!...promise! Piece too small for table saw...and ALWAYS, a push stick!

What kind of cloth are you using for the spacer. I'm rather new to knife making.
@FKnivesCustomBladesAndHandles8 жыл бұрын
Welcome to Knifemaking! I use Cotton Canvas Cloth If I'm not mistaken, it's 8 ounce canvas. Check out the other videos and make sure to ask any questions you may have!

nice handle man! Is that bone handle actually comfortable to hold?
@FKnivesCustomBladesAndHandles8 жыл бұрын
Chris McCaffrey I actually thought it was. I sold it to a guy from Florida and I've only heard positive things. Bone is kind of oval which makes for a great handle. It's also hallow so it's somewhat forward heavy
@jrgarcia92528 жыл бұрын
What was it that you put in the bone before you glued it on?
@FKnivesCustomBladesAndHandles8 жыл бұрын
I Actually put pieces of wood to fill the big preexisting cavity that the bone naturally has. It keeps the blade from shifting inside the bone.
@evangregory81858 жыл бұрын
I figured several layers would make it better

hopefully you didn't ruin the temper while burning it through that block of wood
@FKnivesCustomBladesAndHandles8 жыл бұрын
This is a very common comment, I actually heat up the tail of an old metal file that I don't use any more. If I was to heat up the tail of the knife, it wouldn't ruin the temper because it wouldn't not be hot enough to travel to the blade itself. The Tail on most these blades are actual soft and untempered. Thanks for the comment!

Seems like few people know how to attach a handle without epoxy, or they don't want to go to the trouble of craftsmanship. Looks nice, though.
@FKnivesCustomBladesAndHandles7 жыл бұрын
Maynard Krebs I use materials available to me, not using epoxy for this type of construction with a home isn't really smart because home is hollow, the wood and cloth as well, it makes the knife one solid piece really. If you do have a better way of doing it, do make a video, and show us, I just contribute to the KZbin community :)

Its like a magical ingredient, mostly what soaks it up is the cloth. In some knives, when I use 10 ish pieces of cloth, it comes close to running out. Feel free to check the rest of the channel!
