The Puukko is hands down one of the best knives I have ever owned for it is a pure user-knife. There is no fluff and no nonsense in the design. The sheath with the plastic insert and lock button is perfect and should be used in more knives. The rubber grip has a very comfortable shape were other knives should get some inspiration from, I use my mini skrama and puukkos for carving and never had any blisters - in contrast to other handles. the blades shape and the 80CrV2 steel in combination with a perfect heat-treatment is perfect for carving and general outdoor use, it might dull easier than some super steels but this steel takes a very thin edge and keeps it without chipping or rolling when using it even in harder woods or on antler/bone etc - which is one of the most important features of a survival tool. Also 80CrV2 sharpens like a dream - I have used slate I found outside to get mine back to sharpness. All these features in combination make these the best all around budget bushcraft/survival knifes out there. Dave Canterbury said about the Garberg that it should be a one tool survival option but I think the Varusteleka Puukko fills this role way better for the above reasons.

@Ryan Boswood Hey Ryan, my miniskrama has a full skandi, which I sometimes just microbevel in the field on a fällkniven fine ceramic cc4 so that you cant see the bevel and flatten it at home on dmt stones for they always stay flat. The puukko 110 and 140 have a microbevel at 15 dps which have a completely convex transition into the secondary grind. I cant tell you exactly how thick the primary grind is, but it still cuts very good. To determine the optimal geometry on a knife i do an initial regrind to the geometry I would deem stable for the knife and then use the knife in ever increasingly rough tasks that it might encounter. If it fails(microchipping) I take back the angle of the primary grind a little and blend the bevels(if i have the patience), otherwise I just thin it out until it fails and then repeat the first process. I love a sharp knife in the field and this gives me a sharp blade and the confidence what stress It can withstand. I never take out a knife I haven‘t tested before.

I have the Garberg in stainless, HC and two Terava’s, one with a scandivex, the other standard micro bevel. The Garbergs are nice, definitely cant go wrong there, but l’ll take the Terava every time. There’s something about its handle and location of the edge relative to that handle, the control and precision it bestows is excellent. And for some reason putting a highly convex edge on it really makes it come alive as an amazing wood knife, whereas the regular/original edge is a great all-arounder. It also comes in a 6” version.. a must have for more intense shelter and fire wood chores (more spine to hit with the baton).

Knives from Finland are constructed to be useful in extreme cold weather. Hard plastic handles, like some of the Moras have, are not very comfortable to use in the cold nordic winters. The handle of Mora 2000 is great. You should check out the JP Peltonen knife from Finland, it is just fantastic!

Up to now I have ordered the Jaakaripuuko in 140 carbon with sheath, two 110 carbons with sheaths, one 110 stainless with sheath, three 110 carbons without sheaths, and two Skraamas with sheaths. I like the Terava products a lot.

I own the mora bushcraft, puuko and garberg and hands down favorite is easily the puuko. It's also very easy to sharpen and I've been splitting firewood and starting my furnace with it for years now. All it needs is so stropping to keep sharp. It is however very prone to rust but thats really the only downside. The sheath for the puuko is great aswell, very stylish and it can be used for stropping while in the field. Get the puuko, it's the only knife you'll ever need for bushcrafting and surviva, and it's insanely cheap for what it can dol.

@@paarkour83 It is a functional budget knife made from a nice carbon tool steel, useful only if kept from the elements by a proper sheath and semi-regular application of oil. Both the sheath and the knife I got 5 years ago are still in great shape, veg tanned leather is a really nice material that you can't usually find this cheap, same as with the tool steel: If you take good care of them they could both outlast you.

@@tvmcrusher but as a survival knife, do I always have to carry oil in the wild ? And is it easy to sharpening it in the wild ? Like if there is a crisis and you have to live in the wood. Is it possible to take care of a carbon knife in the wild for long? Or is stainless better for that 🙏🏼
@tvmcrusher
@tvmcrusher Жыл бұрын
@@paarkour83 Good questions, I like it. If you did proper maintenance beforehand and needed to survive without any oil it might become a problem after a month working in frequent heavy rains, the sheath and good old 80crv2 is to thank for it lasting that long. There might be some surface rust on the blade eventually but usually it will not extend beyond the temper, leaving some resin from dry core wood on the blade would also help protect it during long spells of nasty weather. Our ancestors would try to secure access to a variation of natural oils/fats for purposes of tanning, woodworking and metal treatment, but for shielding a carbon blade from corrosion and rust even tallow would suffice, making sure it doesn't contain too much moisture by heating it first. Sharpening and stropping will be easier with carbon than with almost any stainless steel, at the same time the edge will wear quite a bit slower than with most non-vanadium stainless steels with daily maintenance. Stainless is truly great for the corrosion and rust resistance it possesses and a must for many who venture near or into salt water frequently but the trade off is the potential warping of the edge under high stress use, it cannot be tempered as well as carbon because of the high chromium content so it tends to warp rather than break. These same harsh use conditions are often present in a survival scenario so I would consider bringing both carbon and stainless, then try to maintain the carbon blade as a primary tool (mostly) as our ancestors did and save the stainless for light use in harsh conditions and especially for salt water, diving knives are usually marine grade stainless steel containing chromium and molybdenum. What kind of steels do you prefer?

The thicker, full tang Garberg and the Puuko are in totally different leagues, compared to all the others shown. I own all of these shown knives. Steel, handle, sheath, overall value, the Puuko 110 or 140 win in my book.The not shown leather sheath on the Puuko is worth the price by itself! Very tough to beat at this price point. $54-KaBar Kraton Mark 1, maybe? The Garberg handle needs to be "reversed" and made symmetrical for comfort and safety. Very stout knife for sure. I was disappointed in the "feel" and shape of the handle. FYI - The Leather sheath is interchangeable with the old Buck 105 sheath - Ebay Mora Black - Tough to beat. $31 - Amazon as of today. Plastic sheath. A $30 Mora 2000 would be my pick for "light weight" carry (preferred handle over Kansbul). Some don't like the blade geometry? A $20 Mora companion HD should be thrown in the mix also. Finn Bear - Razor sharp, 4116 steel, handle to short. My palm ~3 3/4" wide (~9.525cm?). Hultafors - Blade to short for such a large handle, sheath will not go on belt without "mod", designed to clip on "button". OK4 (I paid ~$22 From UK) great grip, better choice and sheath, much smaller though. Take ANY one of these aforementioned knives combined with a SAK Alox - Pioneer, Pioneer "X" or Farmer, Silky Saw, Fiskars X7 or X11, some "knowledge" and most "campers" will be perfectly fine, just about anywhere, at a relativly low cost and weight. Sorry for the ramble. Thanks for your hard work and the Info!!!!

@winstonS The Terava 110, Mora Bushcraft Black and Forest are interchangeable; All in either sheath; like a glove. These Mora's fit the Terava 140 also, though it is a bit to long of course. The Garberg fits in the Terava sheath; not the other way around. But, it does NOT lock with the snap and rattles quite a bit. You can add "shock" (1/8" bungee cord) to dangler and the knife will not fall out. I add the cord to the Terava sheath anyway so it does not "flop" around as much and still is very flexible on belt. Basically, the Garberg just "press" fits in and out with the snap closed. You could do it I guess; I just tried it and it does work; but rattles if you shake it. Hope that helps?

I've beaten the crap out of my Mora Robust (which I would love for you to review) and the thing won't break. Such a good review man youre on top of your game. That finnish blade looks real comfy and gives Mora a run for their money. I ve been using a Condor micarta Bushlore lately in 1075 which is pretty tough steel with a micro bevel as it works suprisingly well as a mild chopper on green vegetation. A task none of these puukkos do very well. I would hate to see you put it through a manila rope test though, I dont reckon it holds a candle to these two blades. I've found the grind from belly to the tip on the Garberg stainless to be a bit to small and thick. I think the carbon edition seems to have a bit more size of grind from belly to tip. I love my Garberg and have used it a ton but one thing that bugs me is when doing detailed notching that thickness gets annoying. The simple "barrel" style handle on the Garberg is intentional. It is designed that way to make the knife more versatile, because you can hold it any way you want without your grip being compromised, or causing hot spots. The handle on the Terava is a bit more limited in that respect. I do prefer the longer blade on the Terava, though I think both could use another 1 1/2" - 2". The end of the tang on the Mora can be used as a small but handi little hammer as well as a fire steel striker while still in the sheath. The Mora was really well thought out, most people who buy it dont need it for what it was designed for and there stems most of their complaints about the knife. Dave Canterbury was in my opinion very accurate in his statement about the Mora Garberg. I don't own a Terava Pucco, but it looks like a decent knife, especially for the money.

Both Knives do the job but as I have other higher end knives in this category I have 110's as share and spare knives. A 140 too. And just because they aren't flash or expensive they both get loads of use. Sorry Garberg but not the same bargain. I've broken two Hultafors, but then I was abusing them. I don't know if Jaakaripuukko is still one of the best budget option but I ordered one after I saw your comparison. The reason why I bought it is because the price is reasonable, while the edge retention is better. Also there is now 85mm version of it with same width. I think shorter blade(not too short like Eldris) is more useful for my use. Also the primary bevel is much wider - widest I ever saw among those budget friendly knives. This is very important for me because I use the primary bevel as a guide when I sharpen my knives. So I was looking for better edge retention, wider and short blade, wider primary bevel, ergonomic handle and all in low price. Jaakaripuukko seems to be the best so far even now. Your conclusion was different than mine but all those information I needed was in this video. So thank you.

No they are functional knives with classic features and hard as a nail to break. The only thing is the goofy ring on the pommel, I would replace with a trapezoidal steel ring instead, something flat to hammer with.

This knife is tough and for that reason is the instructors knife of the Bushcraft Associations. The instructors use it, we let the students use it even for batoning, and I have not seen a failure. Already got the Garberg, the Jaakaripuukko is on its way. So when I started viewing this video I already knew "my knife" would come out on top :) PS: If you run out of money, you could always make a few videos about which sheaths fits very well with other knives than the one they came with. For instance I found that the leather sheath for Casström No. 14 (which they currently do not list, not sure why) is a perfect fit for my Fällkniven S1. :) DS: Or...if you want to spend more on inexpensive knives, I think the J-P Peltonen M07 Ranger knive (and the M95) belongs in this class. Only issue I have with it is the handle, where I made a simple mod by pulling a piece of thin rubber bicycle tube over the more obtrusive part of the handle - so not to be bothered with the slight "rubber burr" on the "edge" of the handle when not using gloves.
@FrankSchweppe
@FrankSchweppe 5 жыл бұрын
The Peltonen definitely belongs in the same group, being the knife that inspired Varusteleka's design of the Jaakkaripuukko (or JP). I have both and while I like fondling the Peltonen (it's definitely the nicer one to look at), I found that while using it I liked the JP more and more but found little things that irritated me about the Peltonen after a while. I like the blade profile of the Peltonen better, I like the teflon coating, but as a total package, sturdy outdoor knife plus sheath I think that the Jaakkaripuukko wins. Which pains me, because as I said, I really like the Peltonen for its military look and feel. Somehow the thing makes you feel armed, while the Jaakkaripuukko is a heavy-duty tool, less a dagger. The Jaakkari sheath wins by a mile, in spite of the somewhat famous rubber retaining wheel for upside-down carrying of the Peltonen. It would be interesting to see a truly skillful bushperson compare those, with a lot of finer knife tasks included, like notching, fine carving, food stuff etc. in addition to the usual batoning and feathersticking. The outcome might be different.

if you are giving the edge to the mora because the Terava Jaaripuukko is high carbon then imo you dont actually like knives. you literally just have to dry it off maybe add a tiny bit of oil. The Spine is also classic Puukko, rounded

I`ve hammered my Mora companion in 12C27 daily on construction work. 2.5mm and stainless. And its going on. Its more about cracks that happen while heat treatment than about been full tang. obviously that more steel helps. but, also bring more weight. when backpacking, its another issue. So, I just test my knife and if it pass, its ok.

One area where the Garberg handle wins out over the Jaakari is that it fits small hands better (in my experience). Tbh neither feels nimble in the hand and enjoyable to use the way a Bushcraft Black or Companion do.

Those partial tang knives may seem strong when you are hammering them through stuff in your garage, but I can tell you from first hand experience, they crumble under hard usage. Ive had a mora companion in my bag for years, and only recently used it, as I normally have a solid knife on my belt. In my little trial run with the mora, I attempted to process a little fatwood. I say attempted because while trying to shave a thick layer from a stump, looking for that waxy core, I could feel the handle flex along the end of the tang. Had I continued, im pretty certain I'd have been pulling shards of tang and handle from my palm. The mora isn't bad, and has its place, but I feel too many reviewers gloss over its faults. Too many people, myself included, go off that word. The 2 knives you did the video on are dependable at any price point, while the mora companions are just good for the price. Don't rely on them for dire needs

I'm nearly 70 years old and I've been using and sharpening knives since I was a preteen kid of about 7-8 years old. A Barlow pocket knife was a permanent resident in my pants' pockets, even in grade school. I've never met or used a stainless steel knife that was superior in its ability to both hold an edge or be sharpened. Especially, be sharpened. I spent 22 years working in professional kitchens and stainless steel chef's knives suck when compared to a mass-produced carbon steel chef's knife from the 1960s, such as the inexpensive ones that the knife sharpening services would supply to restaurants. Inexpensive, 8"-10" carbon steel chef's knives that brand new in 1965 probably cost no more than $6.00-$10.00. An old knife like that with its thin carbon steel blade will out cut the most expensive stainless steel chef's knives from Europe and Asia that cost in excess of $200.00 *By the way, I just ordered the Terava Skrama 240mm with the brown leather sheath, and the Jääkäripuukko 110mm is next on my list of purchases.*

Only one of those knives is something you could and would use to baton through a brick if you needed to. You certainly wouldn't using the pretty gardberg and the cheaper ones would probably break. If you are willing to and know how to maintain a knife, Jääkäri would be the option. If you are not big on blade maintenance and are willing to spit out the cash, then something with stainless, like the Gardberg. They used to do the Jääkäri in stainless too. If you don't need it for anything heavy duty, the cheap stick tangs will do just fine.
