Even Sony don't know at this point: they're trying to ride on the wave of the MCU's popularity without having a clue what they're doing themselves, whilst (I imagine) trying desperately to get Andrew Garfield back behind the scenes to helm this mess of a "universe:" an absolute mess.

Jared Leto is one of those actors who is just wrong for most roles, but is occasionally cast in something that fits. He can't do leading roles (coz he just isn't interesting enough). But he can be convincing when playing a side character who isn't quite human (e.g. in BR 2049).
@joebloggs6922

I thought he was the worst part of BR 2049. I remember reading somewhere that David Bowie was initially considered for that character, and I think that would have been perfect casting. That somehow makes seeing Jared Leto in the role even worse, on top of his managing to be one-note and overact at the same time.
@jayr7965
@jayr7965 2 жыл бұрын
Considering most movies he's in he ruins the scenes by being a total cartoon character I thought maybe being in a comic book movie he might actually work. Sounds like that isn't the case sadly. I think the problem is he's an over-actor who takes himself far too seriously to ever be fun.

It was clearly butchered in editing after the success of No Way Home (which is why Sony inexplicably brought Michael Keaton's Vulture into their weeping sore of a universe, thanks to a fundamental misunderstanding/wilful disregard of Doctor Strange's spell), so it's no wonder it makes no sense.

@channel019
@channel019 2 жыл бұрын
So the problem with Morbius is without Spider-Man as the protagonist, they've basically had to split Morbius into two characters: Dr Michael Morbius as the protagonist and the second vampire who gets to do all the wild vampire stuff, largely eliminating the internal tension that makes the character interesting.
@HA-ot6uf
@HA-ot6uf 2 жыл бұрын
That's what they chose to do, but they didn't have to. It could have been all about Morbius slowly turning into a genuine monster. Just devoting the whole movie to that and going super in depth with the consequences of that, without a forced good guy vs bad guy dynamic. It probably wouldn't be enough to save the movie, but it'd at least be something unique in the Superhero space.
@PauLtus_B
@PauLtus_B 2 жыл бұрын
I do agree with H A here to a degree. It is a big problem that these are essentially villain movies without committing to it at all. I do think there's an inherent problem that, even though these characters have been expanded on by now, they have been originally created, and been successful as, a character who's purpose was to create conflict for a character who, in this story, is absent.
@jayr7965
@jayr7965 2 жыл бұрын
@@PauLtus_B Honestly the story is the last thing the producers are thinking about when making these movies. Sony are clutching the last vestiges of Marvel IP they have hoping to ring out any money they can from whatever IP awareness they have left. Also getting in Tom Holland is probably impossible due to Disney contracts and crap like that. Needless to say the creatives have to make these movies with one hand tied behind their back.

Jared Leto and comic book films are just not a recipe for success . Morbius is basically a throwback to comic book movies from the mid to late 90s/early 2000s pre-dating the Marvel Cinematic Universe . Matt Smith was great I wish he had played Morbius instead of Leto. The cast really gave their all with very limited material . The movie to me was inoffensive but largely just okay by the numbers for a comic book film where the story lacked structure and as for mid-credits scenes they were just incomprehensible and made no sense.

Except for, you know…he’s an adequate actor? Dude has won a best supporting actor Oscar, so to sit there thinking he can’t act is completely misplaced. For the record; Leto did fine with the material given here. He played it straight, but he made Michael Morbius believable. Matt Smith on the other hand stood out like a sore thumb, and HE was the weak link of the movie. I get the feeling that Kermode has an odd anti Leto, pro Smith bias going on here but based on its own merit as an individual picture, Smith was incredibly weak here.

In fact, the only time his eccentricities DID work was in 'Dallas Buyers Club' He was also pretty decent in 'American Psycho' He seems like the type of actor we expect to be superb in every role. Unfortunately, he dials his performances up to 11, which just comes across as phoney. The only decent thing that ever turned up to 11, was Spinal Tap's amp!

Foundation isn't that bad, I think the world-building is very interesting, though it needs to improve plot-wise in season 2.

@@Pintheshadows Perhaps, but that's got little to do with Jared Harris, unless he's an Asimov fan (and as a rule I prefer judging adaptations on their own merit).

@@luke-alex I can't. You can't take an established master work and brutalise it. I am guessing you haven't read Foundation. I wasn't blaming Jared Harris by the way. It's just unfortunate, but not judging adaptations based on their source material is frankly stupid.

I love that the same day they announce their move to Sony, Mark and Simon end their show by shitting on Morbius, a Sony-produced film. 😂

Never watched this movie and now I know I never will because it doesn't even seem to be fun bad despite what everyone is saying. That clip you guys showed hurt me so much, I don't think I've seen so much "Tell, Don't show" in such a short clip before.
