Mordred Merlin Series Five Interview

He seems very smart and articulate yet very humble and not afraid to be like a silly little kid... this combination of traits is really rare nowadays and that's a shame... wish more people were like that...

When I watched little kid Mordred I meanly thought he was creepy. But I fell in love with Mordred in series 5. I mean from the beginning we know the prophecy about him, he's the threat, the shadow. And yet, as a person, he's so good and kind and genuine. And even in his ultimate betrayal of Arthur, he's not this cruel, remorseless, ruthless villain, he's a broken-hearted boy who genuinely believes he's doing the right thing, the only thing he can do to save his people. It's like his quote in the second episode, "The love that binds us is more important than the power we wield." In many legends Mordred's betrayal is about ambition. He wants to be king. But in Merlin it's not about power, power has nothing to do with it, ultimately it's about love.

I feel the same. Little Mordred was very creepy, but in season 5 he was really a good guy, and he genuinely believed that Arthur would bring the good future they all wanted with kindness and not with hatred and evilness like how Morgana tried to do. And it pains me that when they killed Kara, Mordred didn't even know that Arthur gave her a second chance to regret her sins only for Mordred. He didn't know because he was in the dungeon, and Kara refused to show remorse, moreover she didn't get killed because she used magic... For Mordred this became personal. So I don't agree with this last thing that he betrayed and killed Arthur for his people (people who use magic). He was so broken from losing Kara, he thought Arthur was his friend and he would never do this to him, and after that he loathed Arthur and only wanted to take revenge on him. I'll never forget when they stabbed each other and Mordred was going to die, he just looked Arthur in the eyes and smiled because he knew he got his revenge and Arthur will die. But all in all I don't think Mordred was a bad person, he was just very young, he couldn't sum up the situation, felt betrayed and couldn't control his emotions.

@@anitacsavajda6461 There's actually a deleted scene from.5x12, where Mordred tells Morgana that he wonders if war is the answer and he "believes there is good" in Arthur. So that's why I don't see it as him being out for revenge, but as him thinking its the only thing he can do (hence "You gave me no choice." My interpretation of his smile is a little darker...or differently dark. I don't think its a "haha, you're dying" smile but a smile of relief because *he* is. Aside from Morgana, every person he's ever loved is either dead or his enemy. I don't think he ever planned to survive that battle. Dying means seeing Kara again. Seeing his parents and everyone who died in his Druid camp again.

@@vegetarianvamp101 I'm wondering why I haven't seen that deleted scene, it's interesting. But they deleted it for a reason I guess. I don't really know if Mordred knew he wouldn't survive, they took Merlin's power away, and planned a secret attack from behind, so I think they thought they would finally win. And that grin on Mordred's face was just evil in my opinion, while Arthur's face expressed brokeness and pain thinking how he failed Mordred and he was the one who stabbed him and died with a smile on his face for it. I guess after Kara's death he really didn't have anyone left, just Morgana... He could have chosen to try to understand and to forgive to Arthur, but he didn't. If they would have left that deleted scene in, then it would have been a different meaning for his motivation for war. But like this, it's just pure hate. But on the second tought maybe he really didn't plan to survive the battle, but I think it's more like because he felt like had nothing left to live for, and again just wanted revenge. Anyways I really appreciate for writing back on your 4-year-old comment, I really didn't count on it haha. And thank you for sharing your opinioin.

@@anitacsavajda6461 I think for me one of the key things is he didn't smile when he stabbed Arthur, he just looked down at him grimly. He only smiled after Arthur stabbed him. There's actually an interview where Alexander Vlahos says he doesn't understand why they took that scene out and he wishes they left it in. On another note, regarding your original comment, I do believe things would have been different if Mordred had witnessed Arthur offer Kara a chance and her refuse it. I 9nce wrote a fanfiction exploring that idea. Lastly, its no problem. :) Your reply came up in my notifications, otherwise I probably erupting have seen it. You can find the deleted scene on KZbin if you search for season five deleted scenes. It really is a beautiful scene, heartbreaking but also heartwarming in a way.

Stumbling over actors and characters' names and mixing them up--must be because Merlin is so similar to the name Colin, and maybe because Colin is so much like Merlin, and their personalities are mixed in some ways! I love both of them so much! Colin does an amazing job of playing Merlin, that's for sure! And did Alex say, "Colin and Bradley" because he's so used to hearing the names together and seeing the two actors with each other? 😂

because he is the only reason Merlin couldnt help him to save his friend, so like he lost the one he had loved he thought Merlin would loose the one he loved as well. So he did kill Arthur to affect Merlin.

I think Alexander Vlahos is a future 'A' lister,He is really talented,I preferred his role in 'Privates' so far.There seemed to be a rumour that he was up for the next Dr.Who, and I was hoping that someone at the 'Beeb' would be brave enough,maybe next time!I just think that given his tendency to dig deep into his characters he could bring something genuinely new and unique to the role,anybody else think he would make a good 'Dr' ?

i didnt think he was cute when i first saw him yesterday (1/3/2012) on merlin the other day, but ive been completly overdosing on merlin this past week and had a dream lastnight about him and suddenly hes super cute to me. and after watching merlin related interviews, hes majorly adorable hehe. i love new actors. he seems so fresh and unspoiled with fame. hes so cute
